'Positive' news about Terry Glenn

After visiting with WR Terry Glenn this morning, Jerry Jones relayed news to reporters that Glenn has a "real shot" to help the Cowboys this season. Glenn, who had two arthroscopic surgeries during the preseason, is still rehabbing his right knee.

"He sure is positive," Jerry said, "and it's feeling good for him."

Jerry declined to speculate on a timetable for Glenn's return to the field. Glenn has yet to practice or run routes. He is running and working on strengthening the knee before testing it on the field. Glenn walked by while we chatted with Jerry, heading to the weight room and moving without a noticeable limp.

Jerry said it was possible that Glenn could help the Cowboys in the playoffs without playing a down during the regular season.

"It's going to be a feel thing," Jerry said. "We'll have to get a good feel. Once he physically feels like making the cuts and making runs, it won't be long after that that should be able to help us."

Jerry on keeping Garrett

The Cowboys offense is ranked second in the league overall, third throwing it and eighth running it, and that has more than a little bit to do with Jason Garrett.

It was hard not to imagine, last night watching the Bengals-Steelers game, what he could do in Cincinnati. Difficult, too, to keep from envisioning what he'd be capable of in San Diego, where the Chargers have stumbled to a 7-5 start.

And there might be openings in those two places, and other locales where Garrett would be a hot name. Garrett's 41, and could bring a dynamic presence to another club. Jerry Jones knows all this ... And takes it as a compliment.

"For him to have that kind of recognition means we’ve done well," Jones said. "And that’s about all that I can say about it. I obviously think a lot of Jason Garrett. I’ve been really rewarded by, not just his work ethic, but just how well he’s taken to the play-calling and being the coordinator.

"I think I’ve said this to y’all before, one of the best things about Jason Garrett is that when he leaves the room, everyone in the room, it was their idea. He’s got some real positives when it comes to his people skills that are really showing up here too. All of that means that if he’s really getting a lot of rave reviews, it means we’re doing well, and have done well."

With that said, Jones didn't want to forecast what it might take to keep a star on Garrett's hat in 2008.

"I don’t know want to get into that, that would be speculative, by the very nature of it," Jones said. "But I went a long way out of the way to get him."

Colombo's out

The Cowboys are practicing inside the bubble, and there's a pretty noticeable absence: RT Marc Colombo. Colombo injured his ankle on Thursday night, but returned to perform well against Green Bay's star edge rusher, Aaron Kampman.

Pat McQuistan took reps with the first team at right tackle.

The practice was pretty much a walk-through, or at least it was for the time we were there. Players were in helmets and sweats.

First off re any SD vacancy, the Chargers have already announced that Turner will definitely be back in 08 so you can take that HC job off the list.

Cincinnati - Now why would Garrett want that job. Yes he would have a good QB in Palmer but that team is a mess particularly there defense. You gotta wonder what kind of lockerroom problems they might have as well. I highly doubt the Cincy job is the dream place Garrett wants to start his HC career at.

There may be openings in Miami, St. Louis and 1-2 other places but it also possible those coaches will get another year to make improvements. Anyway, it is far too early to talk about Garrett leaving. For all we know he wants more time learning OC job and might even want to study Wade Phillips approach to head coaching and establishing the defensive scheme which isn't Garrett's speciality.

Just assume he won't be back or won't be able to contribute. That can reduce any frustration. If he does indeed come back, then it becomes a bonus.

At this point it does not matter all that much. We know the team. If he were suddenly put on IR there are no players out there that Dallas can sign that would have any type of impact on the team. These are the players that Dallas is going to go out and try to win with and they are looking like a pretty good bunch.

It is not as if Terry Glenn has done much in the playoffs during his career. In 8 playoff games he has 30 receptions(3.75 per game), 407 yards(50.88 per game) and 0 TDs.

Dallas should pay Garrett like a Head Coach to keep him. Maybe even promise him the job in writing once Wade leaves. As long as Wade is cool with it, some type of split power scheme. Wade has the D and Jason has the O, whoever wants to do the press conferences have at it.

Colombo being out is not a good thing.

I guess we'll get a real good look at McQ.

If it's about money, Jerry will take care of it. I doubt it is, though, and Jason is as good as gone next year. I hope Sparano can take what he learned from Garrett and fill his shoes next season.

How bad do you think Glenn wants to beat Belichick and the Patriots?

He has got to want to knock them off their pedistal in the super bowl.

I hope it works out that way.

I keep asking why Garrett would leave the most ideal setup any coach-to-be could want.

Still haven't gotten a straight answer though. So again. Why would Garrett want to go to a team with numerous holes and far less talent when he can wait a year or two and be the head coach of dallas?

Seriously. Look at the possible openings. Are any of them nearly as appealing as being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys when the Cowboys break in their new stadium?

Right you are.

I would go further: Make that promise to Garrett and then give Wade a couple more years with a promise to get him a front office job.

Garrett is too young and too talented to let him go.
I think Garrett likes the star and he will stay on until Wade gets his jollies and retires. (I hope)

I'm not sold on that. He is losing his team (remember LT's reaction in the Colts game). I have no faith of Norv's coaching ability in the playoffs (nevermind the regular season), so when the Bolts get a short exit in the postseason, further losing this team, and a hot coaching prospect comes along, I wouldn't be surprised to see the FO jump on it.

It's matter of how badly he wants to be an NFL HC. Lot of coordinators move onto another team to become a HC, regardless of team's situation, we've seen it many times over. It is their ultimate goal in coaching ranks.

We simply don't know what JG's desires when it comes to being a HC, he could be chomping at the bits to become a HC as soon as possible with any team or (as we are hoping), he could be patient and wait it out to take over the Cowboys.

If we were 7-5 going into this game with the Lions, I think Terry would be playing - but being 11-1 gives you the option of resting guys, and we would be absolutely foolish to not assume that Terry would give us an upgrade at the WR position, even at 80%.

Imagine Romo throwing to Owens, a healthy Glenn, and Witten. Not to mention handing the ball to McFadden and Barber next year - wow.

Yep. It's nice to hear the SD FO say that, but they really don't have a lot of choice in mid-season, with SD leading the West right now. They have to give him a vote of confidence. It's not like he called back-to-back timeouts in the last game or anything.

In my dream scenario, we manage to hit the Big Dance this season. Redball agrees to stay for one more season, and we go again (and win, of course). Wade, satisfied that he's validated his head coaching ability, decides to run the defense for a couple of seasons as Garrett becomes the HC. Then every few years, they trade places as the NFL chews tinfoil and curses the Dallas Cowboys in vain.

Hey, it's just a dream, but it's a good one.

Im more worried about the Giants trying to steal Garrett from us.

Also, the thought of Terry Glenn in the slot, is music to the ears.

I have a gut feeling Garrett will stay in Dallas. I do believe he knows this job will be his down the line.
