I don't see us keeping Watkins over Mickens. Ball and Smith are similar CB/S tweeners, I don't see why we would keep two of those types along with Watkins. I would think you would want to have at least five pure CBs and then fill out safety with the combination types.
Pat Watkins isn't really a strong player to use that argument with. He's really not that great of a run stopper.

What's it going to be then, eh?

He's not that great of a safety and I think his special teams abilities are overrated. He's been a disappointment after his career started with promise. For whatever reason, the bad habits (like block tackling) still continue.

I think Ball stays just because we can't go with only 3 cornerbacks. Who would you put in his place?

Ball is not a CB. He has been moved to Safety.

The 4th CB competition is between Courtney Brown (who was moved from S to CB) and Mike Mickens.

Oh, and by the way, Idiot ******* Moron Jerk MacMahon does not realize that Ball has been moved to safety even though he is covering the damn team. Goes to show how pathetic of a reporter he is.

Why not just keep 10 DB's?

5 Cornerbacks

Terence Newman
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Courtney Brown
Mike Mickens

5 Safeties

Ken Hamlin
Gerald Sensabaugh
Alan Ball
Mike Hamlin
DeAngelo Smith

Watkins is the odd man out this year and I don't think Hodge is even close to becoming an ILB from SS, so that opens up the 9th and 10th spots on the secondary. I think 4 inside and 4 outside LB's, is enough to dress for the games and Hodge can always be placed on the PS for depth. I understand ST's is important folks, but the other rookie LB's can play ST's and Hamlin, Smith and Mickens are good additions as well.

Replace Watkins with Mickens and I agree 100%. No way we keep only 4 DB's. Mickens makes it as the 5th CB.

Mickens over Watkins for cap reasons.

Because there are better players than Courtney Brown and they need to make room for Buehler. (and of course Smith and Ball can play CB)

Agreed

I think last season Watkins proved that he is not a very good saftey and he will never be starting material.

Problem is, do we have anyone better, or at least someone with some projected upside?

I would be disappointed, to say the least, if he made the 53.

Watkins also had a 1/3 of the STs penalties last year according to Vela. Most of the personal foul variety. We need to lose the dumb ones.

That's what I was thinking. Unless I've missed something, Ball isn't even practicing at cornerback.

I don't see Alan Ball making this team over Mike Mickens, regardless of how many "big plays" he's given up in 7-on-7 drills....but that's just my opinion.

Coaching staff loves Ball. Have for awhile now. He can play corner of safety and is an excellent special teams player. Unless he gets hurt, he's not going anywhere.

You think they are going to send someone with a club after his knee or something?

No, as I pointed out in other threads, i expect that the reason he fell was because most teams thought at some point this off-season, he was going to need to get serious knee surgery that would put him out for the year.

He already had knee surgery, he doesn't need anymore. He needs time.

reading Tim McMahon's chat it seems like Mickens is getting burnt often. Hope he recovers and starts making plays, he and Brandon Williams are my favorite rookies from our draft.

The jury is still out on whether Smith can play CB at this level and Ball has got to be the smallest FS in the NFL at 186lbs. I have more confidence in Brown as a tweener, than I do for Ball or Smith at this point.

We'll see what happens in preseason.

Mickens is a rookie. Rookies always get burnt in camp.

Mickens also has made some impressive plays and snagged INTs. Rookies do not always get INTs and make plays. And most don't even when they become veterans.

Mickens is coming off an injury and did not get to play in the OTAs. Yet the guy has made plays in the first 10 practices. The guy clearly has something, but he is a rookie and needs to adjust to the speed of the game and learn how to read things better.

Worrying about the guy this early in the camp is silly. He has shown flashes, and that is all you can ask of from a rookie at this point.
