Restricting your free agents

The Cowboys enter the off-season with five potentially restricted free agents. They are ...

RB Marion Barber
C/G Joe Berger
DE Chris Canty
LS L.P. Ladouceur
RB Tyson Thompson

The Cowboys have until Feb. 28 to place tender offers on those players. Doing so gives Dallas matching rights on each player, and compensation is based on the amount offered. Here are the four tiers of tenders:

$927,000 -- draft-level compensation
$1.47 million -- second-round pick
$2.017 million -- first-round pick
$2.562 million -- first- and third-round picks

Draft-level compensation is defined as a pick corresponding with where each player was originally drafted. That means the $927,000 tender would merit fourth-pick compensation for Barber and Canty, a sixth-round pick for Berger, and no compensation for Ladouceur or Thompson.

Chances are, Barber and Canty will be tendered at the highest level, effectively taking both off the market. If any of the other three are tendered, it would likely be at the lowest level. If they are not tendered, they become unrestricted free agents. Just so we're clear on that.

I definetly hope the Boyz keep MBIII and Canty. Canty did seem to turn it on this season a little...so keep the young guys!

Feed them pea salad and LET'S GET IT ON!

Tyson can walk but I hope we lock L.P. Ladouceur up long term since we haven't had any problems with him long snapping.

Really, the lack of problems in this area speaks volumes about resigning this guy.

Agreed.

Have to resign Barber to a long term deal.

Should try to get Canty into a long term deal, but isn't a must if we instead tender him with a 1st round pick to see if he continues to get better next season.

We should also resign L.P. Ladouceur because his long snapping solves a problem we don't want to have.

I think Dallas needs to Tender Ladouceur to a second if they can't reach a long term deal.

You just have to believe Parcells would sign that guy in a heartbeat. You never hear about the guy but I think we all know thats a good thing. You almost forget hes even on the team because he never messes up.

Definitely a guy you need to keep.

I guess I am the only one that just wants to tender Barber and Canty for a #1. If someone gives us a #1, it'll probably be a bad team and we'll get a jewel of a pick.

Don't really need to do that and guarantee he costs us $1.47 million next year.

Simply give him a tender and we can match any deal he receives. That way we find out if we have to pay him that much to keep him, and I don't think we'd have to worry about the bidding getting to steep since he is just a long snapper.

I could live with that for Canty, but not Barber. If I was the GM of a team drafting in the latter part of the first round and wanted a running back, I'd give up a first for Barber over drafting any of the ones with potential who might be available.

A team like Seattle would probably take that deal in an instant.

I would also do a draft-level compensation for Berger. The cost isn't that much and I don't mind him as a back-up, but if someone wants him then we get an extra 6th rounder.

True. I didn't even consider a match offer. In any event, have to tender the guy to give the team the chance to match.

I agree 100%. Im not giving any team the chance to sneak out of town with Barber and only have to give up a late 1st-rounder. Not happening.

some of those "Jewels" don't always work out...... We KNOW what we have with these two guys!

Sign them both AND LP!

That's what I think as well.

Why take a risk of losing either MBIII or Canty when there is no need to?

They are just hitting their prime now.
