Richard Bartel and Ken Hamlin

Looking forward to seeing Richard Bartel this weekend when the Cowboys' rookies and first year players get together at Valley Ranch.

Bartel is the No. 3 quarterback in name only and with Jerry Jones talking about looking for a veteran QB to add to the roster, Chris Simms, as Archer pointed out earlier, the pressure is on.

Bartel has the strongest arm on the team, among the QBs that is, but he needs to be more accurate and poised in the pocket. Let's see if he can do that this weekend. Now, his job isn't on the line or anything this weekend, but he can make the right moves to solidify his spot on the roster come training camp.

Free safety Ken Hamlin, who was franchised this spring, hasn't made any progress toward a new contract with the Cowboys. I wonder if the Cowboys will wait until training camp to take care of him

He's a key to Brian Stewart, the DC, and his goals of running the defense.

Just talked to our favorite agents, well one of them, Drew Rosenhaus, who represents Terrell Owens and he had no comment on T.O. forgetting to pay the Eagles some of their bonus money back.

Also, Rosenhaus said there is nothing new to report regarding running back Marion Barber and his contract talks with the Cowboys.

Cowboys offering a new contract in the $30 million range for Barber. He wants something between $40 million and $60 million.

If JJ gives Barber $40-60M he has got mush for brains. Barber will be worn out within 3-4 years with his running style and has yet to prove himself as an elite starting RB in this league. I say just play the year out and let him find the highest bidder in FA and take the compensatory pick. This is much better than being hamstrung on the cap. Take a look at what happened to LJohnson and the Chiefs.

It's kind of interesting to me that Hamlin seems to be such a key figure on this team. I had wondered if he would be let go after the season for a cheaper replacement. Can you afford to keep him and Roy, assuming that Roy steps up and plays better?

I love me some Barber, but I can't see going any higher than $35 million, give or take a few million.

the ideal situation for us capwise is that Roy is resurrected by Campo and one of Watkins/Brown shows they can play FS. This would allow us to let Hamlin walk next year.

$40-$60 Mil.......Jones just might be our #1 back in Sep.....dang

love barber. but he's not worth that jack. if someone wants to fess up a #1 overall, we may have to consider it unless barber comes to reality.

I can't believe you guys want to let Hamlin walk. Look at his age! Look at how he held our secondary together last year! He was the Qb on the field, making sure everyone was lined up correctly and playing the correct coverage! Suddenly, we didn't have the broken coverages for easy TD's against us.

Hamlin is a young PRO BOWL FS....why in the heck would anyone want to let him walk?

If Barber was smart, he'd sign the contract offer. Sure he wants to get paid, but he has a chance to be a key piece to this offense for the next 4-5 years. That could be 3 out of 4 championships like the early '90s.

It seems that Brian Stewart does not want to let him.

I just didn't know if Dallas would be able to afford both, and if Roy resurrected his career, I thought it might make more sense to keep him.

I still think he signs for 1 or 2 mil more than Turner got, he's crazy to ask for between 40 -60.

That's a BIG if...

I'm all for signing Hamlin long term and cutting Roy when the cap hit is managable.

Bingo.

Running back is one of the easiest positions to replace.

$40-$60 mil for a guy who hasn't even cracked 1,000 yards a season is downright goofy.

But I don't blame them asking for it. :)

I love Barber, but I think a RB lineup of Jones/Choice in '10, might not be to shabby, esp. if it means we can keep some of our other players like Newman, Canty and esp. Ware.

Last year Dallas had 419 rushing attempts. This year I think we'll run just a wee bit more. I'm figuring 440 carries-- Let's take a rough look at how those carries might be split:

Barber-200
Jones-160
Choice-50
Romo-30

The point is, I'm not so sure Barber will get 1,000 yards this year either.

To be honest, with our draft, I'd withdraw our contract offer and make him play under the tendered offer and prove himself and then see about next year. Can we tender him again? Greedy players just kill me. :banghead:

Why don't we just franchise him after next season? if he hasn't come to his senses by then...........we'll hopefully be covered with Choice and Jones. just business after all........rosenhaus is a leech BTW........but a good one for his "clients" , I mean "hosts"

Franchising him would pay him the average of the top 5 at his position which again puts him in the 40-60 mil range.

"Nothing New" means just that. Let's remember that the Cowboys have been pretty busy with the draft. There will be time to deal with contract issues over the next couple of months.

We're giving Hamlin $5M/yr right now with the franchise tag. My guess is they are asking for something in the $7M/yr range and that is why we are balking at paying that price for a non-impact position.

The best case scenario is one of the kids steps up, Roy becomes re-invigorated and we can let Hamlin walk for the compensatory pick.

To me the real priorities are Ware, #1 WR (TO or someone availabe by trade or FA), Canty and Newman. The others (Barber, Hamlin, RoyW - although we have sunk costs with him, Columbo) we can do without. I'm not even sure about Newman in terms of the cap aspects of things as I just don't think shutdown corners are worth what they were 10 years ago.
