Robert Brewster is a right tackle for right now

One of the reasons the Cowboys liked third-round pick Robert Brewster is because they believe he can any guard or tackle position.

But the coaches don't want to throw too much, too fast at Brewster. That's why he's only playing right tackle, his primary position at Ball State, during the rookie minicamp.

"You play golf? As soon as you start thinking about two or three different things, it gets worse," OL coach Hudson Houck. "It's the same thing with learning a position. If he knows exactly what to do and he's well prepared, it eliminates any uncertainty that he might have, and therefore he can play at full speed and he thinks at full speed."

I figure they might as well throw him directly into a guard position right now, since just about every other player drafted save the QB and kicker are learning new positions anyway. Unless of course they feel that they have more of a need at RT right now anyway.

I think it might have had to do with most of the other linemen they brought in are guards so somebody needed to play tackle. Plus its still a good idea to see if he can play tackle(even the left) since that position is more valuable.

That was my thinking. Turkovich is the only other tackle out there. The other four are interior linemen.

I'm all for seeing if he can play Tackle, but please give him a position and let him learn it. If you have designs on the guy starting at some point, start prepping him for it early.

1 thing at a time... is a nice way of saying he is not too bright or we just cant coach young linemen, EVER!

This minicamp is an acclimatisation exercise for the rookies, getting to know the coaches, VR and the other players but now Brewster is not too bright. Jeez, he'll soon be bust.

I honestly cannot wait to see this doofus wearing goggles or glasses under his helmet.

I'm pulling for goggles.

From their draft moves and the undrafted rookies signed, it looks to me like they're counting on Doug Free to be the one backup at left tackle.

Hopefully he's up to the task.

Now, and for the future as well.

I'd love to see this guy come in and actually push Flo at the position. It's his third year in the league now and he should be getting ready to play if he is ever going to. If we can eleminate two to three false starts per game that would be huge.

I'm in full agreement.

I'm all for any investment in that position.

For me, Adams is a guy who does enough to get by and no more.

He could be so much more than what he is, but the drive to be great just isn't there.

And he checks out mentally several times per game as well.

I've been disappointed that the Cowboys haven't made a serious draft investment in the left tackle position in years, but rather have thrown money at Adams instead.

Hopefully, Free is that investment and he pans out.

But the fact that the team was so reluctant to play him at all last season concerns me.

When flo could not lift his arm and had an infection in his hand, and they still did not play Free or McQ that means two things: our coaching staff is stupid or they are worthless. Hard to tell which is worse.

He said on draft day that he doesn't wear anything because all he has to do is hit what's right in front of him anyway. :) I wanted to see the Eric Dickerson look myself.

This seems like a pretty stupid idea. If the goal is to have him at guard, stick him there now. It's not going to help his progression to guard to be playing tackle right now.

Honestly, my faith in Houck isn't that high right now.

If this were a full contact mini-camp, I would agree with you.

Fair point. If this is a just get 'em on the field and look at them type situation, Houck's statement makes sense.

That is exactly what it is, a glorified workout to see where they are with conditioning, get an upclose look at footwork and get them used to the practice tempo and habits.

All I can say about Brewster is I hope Houck is right. I don't think we can afford yet another premium pick bust on the offensive line. We are going to need some depth capable of starting this year or next, I am afraid. If we don't have that, then we go into next April desperate for them and that thought frightens me because apparently we have no clue how to develop them.
