Emmitt OK with Pacman as long as bullets don't fly

Don't expect to hear Emmitt Smith rip the Cowboys for adding Pacman Jones to the Valley Ranch Circus. Emmitt likes the trade with the Titans.

"If he's not getting arrested, I'm OK," Emmitt said. "That's just me. if he's not getting arrested, I'm OK as long. As you're not getting arrested, you're OK. As long as you're not killing nobody or getting anybody shot at and going to jail, I have no issues with that. Your personal life is your personal life."

Spoken like a man who won three Super Bowl titles with some teammates who had ... um ... interesting personal lives.

Three stars from rookie minicamp

We'll borrow a page out of the hockey playbook, since folks have Stars fever around these parts, and go with three stars. As Wade Phillips wisely noted, you can't tell too much from watching a bunch of guys run around in helmets and shorts, but here are a few that looked good during rookie minicamp.

Felix Jones: Jones didn't play in a sophisticated passing attack at Arkansas, but he impressed Cowboys coaches with his route-running ability and hands all weekend. Heck, Wade Phillips is comparing the kid to Thurman Thomas. Jones made a spectacular, leaping grab on the sideline after running a wheel route during this afternoon's practice. It'll be tough to beat the Curse of 22, but Jones got off to a good start.

Orlando Scandrick: The fifth-round cornerback from Boise State had a better minicamp than first-round pick He has 4.36 40 speed, but his ability to break on the ball is just as impressive. It's not hard to see why a lot of folks considered Scandrick the steal of the fifth round.

Danny Amendola: We could go with second-round TE Martellus Bennett or fourth-round RB Tashard Choice, who both had solid minicamps. But I'm thinking folks want to read about an undrafted dude with a chance to make the cut. Amendola, a proud Wes Welker wannabe from Texas Tech, has the best shot. Just ask Jenkins, who got beat a bunch by Amendola during the four practices. "He's real quick -- a great receiver," Jenkins said. "He's got great speed breaks and is real decisive. He's tough to cover."

Wade sees Thurman Thomas in Felix Jones

Wade Phillips thinks a lot of Felix Jones. Seriously.

Today, a reporter asked the coach whether Tashard Choice's running style compares at all to Marion Barber's. Phillips said it was tough to put a rookie up against a Pro Bowler.

And then he compared his first-round pick, Felix himself, to a Hall of Famer.

"When I saw him on tape, he runs a lot like Thurman Thomas did," Phillips said. "His feet are close to the ground so he can cut quickly. And he sees people. He has great vision in my opinion, we'll see how it all works out. He sees the safety over here if he's coming. When he running with the ball over here, he sees people over there.

"I think he's special in that area. He can do all the other things, he can make people miss, he can accelerate, all the things that really good backs do. But his vision is special."

Phillips explained that both backs don't pick their feet up far off the ground, allowing them to change directions quicker. He did allow that comparing Jones to Thomas as receiver right now was probably a little out there, since Thomas just so happens to be one of the greatest pass-catching running backs of all-time.

Also on hand for today's festivities was former Oklahoma and Cowboys coach Barry Switzer. He, too, was smitten with Felix and lamented the Sooners allowing him to leave the state.

Jones was a senior in high school during Adrian Peterson's freshman year at OU, which made heading to school there seem like a pretty bad idea. So he wound being in the same recruiting class as Darren McFadden instead.

Switzer referred to Jones as a "Shorty Daddy" and a "Pop Warner back" -- kinds which the ol' coach apparently has an affection for -- confusing some reporters with his brand of super-jargon.

"I've always like the Pop Warner guys, Greg Pruitt, those guys that stop, start and go sideways on you, slash, go north-and-south, hard guys to get ahold of, I've always liked that," Switzer said. "Phyiscal stature, he's like a lot of our guys. I never liked the big back. I'm an East-West offense, stop and start, those guys took too long to accelerate and get started agaiin. I liked Short Daddies, low balance, Barry Sanders. Barry Sanders was alright, wasn't he?"

Whatever you say, coach.

Good for Danny. In a year or two he may just pull a Wes Welker and get the slot spot.

I didn't like the Jenkins pick to begin with.
Now he's getting used by an UDFA and outperformed by a 5th rounder.

Superb evaluation.

You should try to be a team scout.

Hmm Scandrick could wind up being the best young CB on the team??? Way too early to tell but I will say he's as physically gifted as any DB on our team including Newman.

How Jenkins performs in rookie minicamp is far from how well he can do in TC & the preseason games. No way do I expect/want Jenkins to start; he can start later in the year as he adjust to NFL speed, etc. After all, the Chargers Cromartie didn't start til later in the year & the Giants Ross didn't really contribute also until later in the year. Jenkins will okay so stop worrying or think he already a bust. Geez.

I'd have trouble too if I spent most of my time jamming receivers and playing close to them, then have to adjust.

Let's see how well Scandrick jams compared to Jenkins.

What are you talking about? What was there to evaluate? It was in the OP that he was getting beaten by Amendola and outperformed by Scandrick.

I think the general feeling Catch was trying to convey was that just because Amandola got the best of Jenkins in his first day in a Cowboy helment, that doesn't mean Jenkins isn't going to be a good CB for us this year.

Besides, Amandola's college coach admitted that Amandola hits the ground running whereas other players have to get in the swing of things a bit. As soon as I heard that, I thought that whoever was trying to cover Amandola in this minicamp would be in for a little bit of a rough time.

Thurman Thomas is pretty high praise...

Indeed. Can you imagine him paired with Marion Barber?

If we end up with that kind of backfield... lookout!

I posted yesterday a blog entry before the draft from a Chicago paper that said the Bears long-time SW area scout said Felix was "special" and the writer mentioned the scout doesn't often use that term.

Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing him in TC and pre-season.

Beyond the three stars

Timmy Mac handled who he felt were the three stars of the weekend mini-camp here. I'm not going to necessarily disagree, but please do not get too carried away on what any of these four practices actually meant.

Some things I liked

Tearrius George - He was signed to a futures contract after last season after playing in Canada. Of the three outside linebackers in the mix - Erik Walden, a sixth rounder, and Darrell Robertson, making the move from defensive end - George was the most fluid. At 6-4, 270, he was surprisingly nimble and could really bend coming off the edge on pass rush drills (and you thought on Albert could come up with some football-talk.)

Daniel Polk - He's making the move from QB at Midwestern State to receiver in the NFL. It's a jump, but he showed some good hands and didn't seem to be a body catcher. I think the receiver crew in general was pretty strong.

Richard Bartel - His year on the practice squad really benefitted him. He has dropped 25 or so pounds and looks like he can move a little better. He was more efficient Friday than he was Saturday, but there might be something there with the former Grapevine product.

The way Dave Campo coaches. I wasn't here for his first go-round with the Cowboys, but he looks like he's a teacher. He does it by showing, without yelling, and the players responded to it.

The way John Garrett coaches. He was on Martellus Bennett from the first practice. Garrett is a stickler for the little things, like finishing plays and holding the ball high and tight. Bennett would be wise to listen. We'll have more on Bennett's eagerness later in the week. I think it's there.

Imagining Campo demonstrating footwork to young DBs kinda makes me laugh. It's a funny image, you gotta give me that.
