Some facts and opinions on Michael Irvin's 10-week "so-you-wannabe a Cowboy" series that ended on Monday with Jesse Holley anointed at the 80th man.
* The show averaged about one million viewers a week, less than Spike TV had hoped for but not disastrous. It didn't help that the show started against the NBA Playoffs and, in its ninth week, went up against baseball's All-Star game.
*Spike loved the idea of being associated with the Cowboys and Michael Irvin. It brought older viewers to the network, whose primary audience is young males.
* If there is a second season, the show should air in February on the heels of the Super Bowl and before the draft. That would give the winner a chance to attend mini-camps and work out at the practice facility before training camp. It would complement NFL Combine coverage. Allowing a long lag time between taping (April) and airing (June-July) made for an awkward situation when it became obvious that Andrew Hawkins wouldn't win. He was already playing for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes.
* There is some talk that NFL Network could become involved. Perhaps NFLN would air replays. Having NFLN would mean having the blessing of the NFL, which the show did not have this season. That would mean additional promotion.
*Season II: running backs and linebackers?
