Should Cowboys pursue another ILB if Ray Lewis re-signs with the Ravens?

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Reports out of Baltimore indicate the Ravens will try to hammer out a deal with Ray Lewis before he can hit the open market Feb. 27.

Should the Cowboys target another inside linebacker in free agency?

It'd be a surprise if Zach Thomas returns to Valley Ranch. It's questionable whether Kevin Burnett will be back, and durability issues would be a concern if he's the starter next to Bradie James.

If the Cowboys don't re-sign either of their ILB free agents, they'd probably have a draft pick competing with Bobby Carpenter for a starting job.

Bart Scott could be the odd man out in Baltimore. If they Cowboys want to sign the 28-year-old, they'd have to outbid the Jets among other teams.

Scott wouldn't fill the Cowboys need for a locker room general, as Lewis put it. But he would fill a big void at inside linebacker.

If the Ravens sign Lewis then you can forget about Scott, he would get the tag

I was thinking they might tag Suggs...

I think Bart Scott is going to get a nice payday, and I don't think it will be in Dallas.

Really, I think Ray Lewis is the one LB that Jerry would pay big for, and that would be as much for his leadership as anything else. I'm not a big fan of that idea either though.

I actually think that Carpenter can do a decent job for this team, so I would like to see him get a shot.

I guess it comes down to, would we rather have Scott or Burnett? I think Scott is the more physical of the two IMHO.

I wouldnt mind Scott. I've been a fan of the bring Ray Lewis here idea but I wouldn't sneeze at having Scott.

Larry Foote of the Steelers might be available, his snaps have been reduced due to the play of Lawrence Timmons, so maybe that first pick in the 4th round for a Experienced 3-4 ILB?. Thoughts?.

They're not going to manage to hang on to all 3 but whoever slips through is going to be awfully expensive.

The Jets have a ton of cap room now that Favres 13 million salary is cleared. They are going to throw TONS of money either at Ray Lewis or Bart Scott. I really don't want Burnett starting, but it might be our only way to cheaply fill a spot. Hopefully draft a Mckillop/Phillips and have him platoon with Burnett?

I think getting any of the LBs from Bal is a pipe dream.

Yep, Suggs and Scott are gonna get paiddd.

I'd rather have Landry over all of them though.

He would be a cheap option. But imo, would back-up Bradie James. I'm not sure what position he plays in pittsburgh (weaside or strongside), but I see him as just a run stuffer and ok blitzer, like Bradie James. I'd still be in favor of signing him, but only pay him as a back-up cause I wouldn't be suprised if he doesn't crack the starting line-up

Ya I agree 100%. I just have a bad feeling with Scott. He had one good year...his contract year!. Those guys worry me. He was also in a pretty good system under Rex Ryan and reminds me of Edgerton Hartwell. Remember he played with Ray Lewis and was a hot commodity? He went to another team and just was a complete bust after getting paid. Suggs would be a dumb move since we have Spencer.

Landry is a RFA so you know they'll slap a tender on him. I liked him coming out of college and can play the SS position that we desperatly need. I just really hope they don't tender him.

Bart Scott = Edgerton Hartwell... Do some recon. Find out who Pitt and Bal has on their draft board and snatch them before they do.. :) They have no problem finding LB's..

Are you serious? Larry Foote is legit and FAR better than Burnett and Carpenter. He's been to the pro-bowl multiple times..I didnt know he was a FA? I thought it was Farrior.

The ILB crystal ball says...

The Ravens will re-sign Ray Lewis.

The Cowboys will allow Kevin Burnett to leave via Free Agency and he ends up in San Francisco.

Zach Thomas doesn't return.

Karlos Dansby and Bart Scott are not pursued in Free Agency

Bobby Carpenter starts for the Cowboys and has a very good year. He even assumes a leadership role.

Cowboys fans everywhere post about how they knew all along he just needed a chance.
