STOCK RISING

WR Sam Hurd: He caught five passes for 79 yards, catching every ball cleanly and doing some damage after he got the ball in his hands. Hurd, who entered the game as the clear No. 4 receiver, also drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone. His performance was tempered a bit by two holding calls, on one the opening kickoff and one on a long Tashard Choice run.

CB Orlando Scandrick: Oakland tested Scandrick deep twice. He had great coverage on seventh overall pick Darrius Heyward-Bey both plays. He also made a good tackle in the open field against Darren McFadden to prevent the Raiders from extending a drive.

RB Keon Lattimore: Barring an injury to one of the Cowboys' three proven backs, Lattimore has little chance to make the team. But he helped his cause with the other 31 teams by rushing for 55 yards on 11 carries. He also caught two passes for 14 yards.

STOCK FALLING

WR Miles Austin: While Hurd put on a show, Austin dropped the only pass that was thrown his way, a slant from Jon Kitna that hit him between the numbers. Austin has had a good training camp, but the gap between Nos. 3 and 4 appears closer than the one between Nos. 2 and 3.

LB Bobby Carpenter: It's the same story as last summer: Carpenter looks good in training camp but struggles once the games start. He's fine in his nickel and dime role, but the Cowboys can't have any confidence in him if he has to start in place of Bradie James or Keith Brooking. He was a non-factor against the run, getting credited for only one tackle despite extended playing time against a Raiders offense that racked up 6.8 yards per carry.

CBs Courtney Brown and Mike Mickens: They got a vote of non-confidence when Alan Ball, who has been focusing on free safety, started opposite Orlando Scandrick. Brown and Mickens confirmed that they're not yet NFL-caliber cornerbacks once they got on the field. They both were beaten repeatedly, picked on by journeymen quarterbacks Bruce Gradkowsi and Charlie Frye, who combined to throw for 241 yards and two TDs. Brown, a third-year player, is probably running out of time to prove he can play. Mickens, a rookie seventh-rounder, is on the roster bubble.

Have always loved Hurd's hands. He has just had injuries, it seems, each year!

He played 15 games as a rookie and 16 in 2007. Last year was his only significant injury where he missed most of the season.

Hurd got more opportunities because he created them and was productive. Don't pass over how hard Hurd worked and how well he performed to puff up Miles, Miles needs to step up. Hopefully he brings it for the next preseason game, we have a lot riding on him.

Good posts: Brown and CARP should be cut: they bring nothing to the table.

Austin? Great potential but the injuries and dropped passes: Hurd is moving past him IMO............

Trying to blame Carpenter because the second string D could not stop the run is a little suspect because the back up D line was pretty poor against the raiders first string O line. Did not say he was really good but as far as blame goes you have to look at the D line first.

I'm not passing over Hurd on anything...he was my favorite WR 2 seasons ago.....yea i have a bigger crush(no homo) on Austin now, but i didnt say anything to discredit Hurd, i said he got more opportunities

Kitna likes hurd so he goes to him more, just like Brad johnson last year, went to Austin more in preseason

After last year's stint at Free Safety, I came to the conclusion that Courtney Brown is not an NFL caliber player.
