A few more visits

The Cowboys met with nearly 30 prospects from around the country over the last few weeks. The doors are now closed until draft day. We had a list of a few of them, and here's a few more:

Southern Cal receiver Dwayne Jarrett, Northern Illinois tackle Doug Free, Tennessee guard Arron Sears.

Jarrett is intriguing. He put up hellacious numbers for the Trojans. He's big, but he's not fast. He catches everything. If not for Mike Williams, whom the Lions took before DeMarcus Ware two years ago, then Jarrett would be viewed better.

Free had the nickname, "Doug Freak," because of his athletic ability. Sears can play either side as a tackle or guard.

A not-so educated guess

Since Dale Hansen, Rock Gosselin and Jerry Jones were nice enough to have me on the Hummer NFL Draft Webcast today, I'll let you in on a secret: I think the Cowboys take Miami safety Brandon Meriweather in the first round.

Here's why: He can play corner, safety, special teams. The last time the Cowboys had one of those guys his name was Darren Woodson. Now Meriweather's character will be an issue after the incident with Florida International and some gun play, but the Cowboys had him in for a visit. Jerry met with him personally and called him a "unique," player.

Of course, it's Monday, so I reserve the right to change my mind by the end of the week.

Moving up? down? all around?

For nearly an hour today Jerry Jones met with the local media to discuss the team's draft plans. Well, not really the plans, unless you count saying the team may trade up, trade down or stay where they are.

Now, the trade up possibility has me intrigued. The Cowboys have not moved up in the first round in a long time. Jerry believes there are eight or so "wow" players, so if one of those, "wow" guys falls to No. 11, the Cowboys will be on the phone trying to get a deal done.

As for trading down, they did it in 2004 and ended up with two No. 1s in 2005, which is a good thing. The Cowboys have 10 picks, so they can be ultra-active if they choose to be. But sometimes sitting still is the best move to make

How good is Meriweather?

I don't recall watching many Miami games.

He is really athletic. He is a rangy safety that can play corner, nickel corner and man press coverage.

He really would fit in perfectly here, so we will see. Teams may have him higher than 22 and someone may take him before 22.

Thanks.

Like, can we move him to CB when Henry is done? Is he capable of being a full time CB if need be?

Or is he more of a S who can play some CB when needed a la Darren?

Does he compare to Woodson?

He won't be able to slide to the corner full-time. He is a safety more like Ed Reed than those that have come out in recent years. I think he is the 2nd best safety behind Landry.

He isn't the same as Woody physically. Woody had played LB in college so he was used to being more physical. That doesn't mean Meriweather will not hit you. He is smaller than Woody at 6'0 192 lbs. Very good player.

I dont think he can play the run and tackle like woodson, obviously woody was a linebacker so..its a stretch to compare.

I dont think they would view him as a corner, just that if teams come out in base offenses and then spread them out, he can play the slot just like a corner, it is a valuable piece to have on defense. Keeping that extra linebacker on the field can keep teams from running on you in nickel and other odd sets.

If we do take Merriweather, it must mean the Cowboys have a very high opinion of him because Jerry said in his PC today that if they do select a safety, he would have to be special... "like Roy Williams special"...

...then again, Jerry said a lot today, so until Saturday...

They talked about it last year during the draft when Whitner went #8 (much higher than expected). The trend is to try and find athletic, versatile players at that position.

i think merriweather is the best DB in the draft its just his charachter that is the problem.. i think hes better than landry and better than hall too... if it wasnt for his character hed be a 10-15 pick

If nelson is off the board, im in favor of taking meriweather. He won't get past new england at 24. I would compare him to woodson, he can cover the slot as well make plays at the line if scrimmage. Seems like were looking for versatility. If he's the BPA at 22, grab him.

I think he'd be listed as a Safety and eventually play opposite RW on first downs.

I think he's viewed as very capable of moving to the slot on coverage downs. I think that is where he's viewed as being like a CB.

But I don't see him being a full time CB as in Henry/TNew. It's really blurry there IMO as he might play more like a CB in some games than as a true Safety.

Meriweather, Landry and Nelson could play CB if forced into it IMO. But they are safeties.

I actually like Meriweather a little better than Landry too. I always kind of end up comparing Meriweather to Ed Reed. I think he can play either safety, and I think he can play some corner too. That is what gives him the edge on the field, in my opinion. The off-the-field issues will hurt him though. The question is, how much?

That's the way I see him as well. Maybe not quite as physical but a playmaker. I don't know about the character issues either. I guess you're on one side or the other.

i think it's important that Jerry brought Meriweather into Valley Ranch and had a sitdown conversation with him. He's never actually been convicted of anything. He made a mistake with that huge on the field brawl last season, and he used a handgun, which was legally his, under self defense. Supposedly teams that interviewed him were very impressed.

Well, I, for one, am not sure whether or not some of the off-field issues were blown way out of proportion.

I don't know, I just can't get the image of that brawl out of my head whenever people start salivating over Meriwether.

As I've been saying, blah. Blah to Meriwether and just about everybody else that will likely be available at 22.

I hope we trade out of the first for a number 1 next year. Future picks are way undervalued IMO.

I don't know one way or another either. I just hope he interviewed well enough and learned from his one off-the-field incident (the gun matter) and the one on-the-field incident (FIU brawl). Hope the kid stays the straight and narrow and works hard on his craft so he can have a good long career whereever he ends up.
