Ok, now that Brett Favre is a Jet, and Chad Pennington will get cut later today, let's examine how this impacts the Cowboys.
Brad Johnson is a solid backup quarterback for this team. His experience helps Tony Romo and the other young quarterbacks such as Richard Bartel.
But, his arm strength isn't up to par with Romo's. The good thing about Johnson is he makes the right reads and when that first read isn't there, he moves on very quickly.
The question is if the Cowboys win the Super Bowl this season, would Johnson, who turns 40 on Sept. 13, want to retire. He's already won one Super Bowl.
So, do the Cowboys need a younger version of Brad Johnson?
Yes, they do.
The leading candidate is Richard Bartel, who has the strongest arm in camp.
But he's not progressing fast enough in order for the team to believe in him long-term.
Jeff Terrell, the other quarterback, nice guy I'm sure, but not good enough to challenge Bartel.
So, where does this leave the Cowboys?
Find a veteran quarterback.
I think if Chris Simms of Tampa becomes available, the team might give him a look. Why not? He's better than Bartel.
Pennington is out of the picture with Miami and Chicago as possible destinations for him.
Daunte Culpepper's health is an issue and he wants too much money to be a backup.
It's not easy to find a backup, but I believe the team is very happy with Johnson.
