This draft wasn't all about special teams

The men who were in the Cowboys' War Room want to make that clear.

There's a perception that special teams were the Cowboys' top priority during the draft, in large part because Jerry Jones sure made it sound that way.

"What I meant was immediately, that allows us to keep them on the 53," Jerry said today, referring to the final roster. "We'll have some special teams contribution, and these guys, many of them will eventually I think be able to compete to start in the NFL."

Fifth-round kickoff specialist/special teams dude David Buehler was obviously picked solely for special teams. As for the rest of the guys in the dozen-man draft class ...

"We picked them as football players," Wade Phillips said. "What we did was we picked football players who could help us on special teams, not special teams players that might could be football players.

"These guys, most all of them, have been productive, all-conference players. We've got sack leaders, we've got interceptions leaders, all those things. They were all football players who played special teams well. We had other guys in the draft that we did not draft who were good football players, but we didn't feel like they'd help us on special teams much. That was our priorities. It wasn't the other way around."
