** With Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo sitting out of practice, Doug Free was the starter at left tackle and Pat McQuistan started on the right. Leonard Davis took a few turns at left tackle with the second team.

** Roy Williams' only touchdown with the Cowboys last year came on an alley-oop from Brad Johnson against Tampa Bay. His size makes him a mismatch that close to the end zone. He connected on 1-of-2 tries Monday, coming down with one over Mike Mickens but unable to do the same vs. Courtney Brown.

** Terence Newman was sharp in the afternoon. He opened the afternoon practice with back to back breakups on throws to Patrick Crayton and Williams.

** Rookie QB Rudy Carpenter had a nice touchdown throw to Kevin Ogletree through a tight window between two defensive backs.

** Ogletree makes plays. I'm not sure where the Cowboys stand in their thinking on the No. 5 wide out but the undrafted kid from Virginia seems to do something good everyday. And Willie Reid has been on the up tick lately.

** Tony Romo has the touch to throw just about any pass. He floated a throw to the right flat just over Victor Butler but with enough oomph that Felix Jones did not lose a step in a race to the end zone.

** LB Bobby Carpenter had another would-be sack in team drills.

** S DeAngelo Smith had two pass breakups in the afternoon, busting up a throw to tight end John Phillips in the back of the end zone and a pass wide to Mike Jefferson in the corner.

** LB Stephen Hodge was activated off the active/PUP list and practiced for the first time. He is coming back from surgery. He said after the practice his conditioning felt fine but that he needed work on the defense. A calf injury kept him out of most of the OTAs.

I like how there's no negatives in any of the beat writers' observations. Protecting their sources indeed.

Willie Reid intrigues me. He was a guy I wanted us to draft back when. He was a really good player at FSU.

What are his strengths? I hear that he might have the most potential as a punt returner.

Nice observation.

Never mind how they looked though, it's not something we fans are the least bit interested in.
