Tony Romo needs to rally the troops

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Wade Phillips mentioned that he's coached teams that have fought their way out of trouble before. He cited the 1998 Bills, who started 0-3 and finished with 10 wins.

Phillips didn't get into details when asked what sparked that Buffalo squad's turnaround.

"I made some changes," he said. "I tried to change things. I don't know."

Todd Archer, who is always eager to help, mentioned that Phillips changed starting quarterbacks. Rob Johnson was replaced by Doug Flutie.

A few hours later, it hit me. Phillips is a fine head coach when he has a starting quarterback with some major moxie. He's a poor head coach when he doesn't have an excellent leader at the game's most important position.

Phillips' stint in Buffalo is the best indicator of this. Johnson looked a lot more like a QB than Flutie, but the Bills were 21-9 when the little fella started and 8-10 when Johnson got the nod during Phillips' tenure.

The Broncos were 16-14 in John Elway's starts during Phillips' two seasons as head coach, 0-2 when the Hall of Famer was out. The Cowboys are 17-6 with Romo under center the last two regular seasons and got blown out by a bad team when he missed a game.

In the cases of Elway and Romo, their backups are significantly less talented, of course. But, when your head coach has the motivational powers of a peanut, you better have a quarterback that the rest of the team can rally around.

The Cowboys are doomed if the players continue to reflect Phillips' personality. Dallas still has a chance to be a legitimate contender if Romo gets his mind (and pinkie) right and rubs off on his teammates.

What an insult to Elway....Elway has clout, bling and laser rocket arm.

How is it an insult to Elway? The OP was just giving his opinion of Wade with a fine QB under center. If anything it's a compliment. He was not comparing Elway to Romo.

Couldn't this exact same thing be said for about 80% of head coaches? I mean how many really do really well without a darn good QB?

Who would have thought that the Elway Broncos and the Romo Cowboys would be worse when they weren't playing?
