A day after Tony Romo's attempt to move on to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open fell short, so did his attempt to move on to the "open" qualifying for the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

Romo shot a 79 Tuesday on the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney and he was done in again by No. 16, like he was Monday at Dallas National Golf Club.

Sitting at 2-over with three holes to play and in contention to finish in the top 23 to move on to the next round of qualifying, Romo made a triple bogey on the par 5. After a perfect tee shot, Romo's second shot sailed right into hip-high grass. Needing a few minutes to find his ball - with the help of some spectators - Romo took three more hacks in the tall stuff before getting into the opening.

He bogeyed his final two holes to finish 7 over.

Fear not, he was on his way to Valley Ranch after his round for a work out Tuesday. On Monday, he worked out before his round at Dallas National.

Emmitt Smith finds concern over Tony Romo playing golf funny

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

You can't mention Tony Romo playing golf around these parts without folks worrying about whether he's focusing enough on football.

Emmitt Smith is proof that a playing a lot of golf during the off-season doesn't prevent a guy from being really good at football. Golf was Emmitt's favorite off-season hobby during his Hall of Fame career, although he readily acknowledges that he wasn't at Romo's level on the links.

When asked about people criticizing Romo for playing too much golf, Emmitt let out a hearty laugh.

"Man, this is the off-season," Emmitt said. "Whatcha think a guy is gonna do? Sit around? I mean, as long as he's training and taking care of his body, which I think he is. Maybe golf is a way to relax. There's a lot of metaphors between golf and football."

Unfortunately for Romo, the metaphor that immediately springs to mind when reading about his late-round fades this week isn't a pleasant one.

Thank you Emmitt, but the mouth breathers still won't get it. If he sat home playing Madden and getting fat they would think he was studying football.

Idiots.

Ha-ha, mouth breathers... classic. I don't know how these guys do it in Big D, they can't take a dump without getting criticized.

Romo squeezes in workouts around golf
May 13, 2009 6:30 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo failed in his bid to advance in U.S. Open qualifying Monday and then he came up short in an HP Byron Nelson Championship qualifier Tuesday. Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News documented both rounds and quickly pointed out that Romo worked out at Valley Ranch both days.

Some people wonder if Romo's playing too much in the offseason, but honestly he's probably playing about the same amount as any other avid golfer/NFL player. We just notice him more because he attempts to qualify for professional events. I think the folks who run Nelson (the Salesmanship Club of Dallas) are missing a golden opportunity by not granting Romo a special exemption. He's a scratch golfer, so it's not like he's going to embarrass himself too badly. And it would help bring more people to an event that has lost some of its luster since Nelson died -- and Tiger Woods no longer shows up.
