For the third straight year, Tony Romo will play in the Azalea Invitational at the Country Club of Charleston (S.C.).
The tournament starts Thursday and Romo will be paired in the first two rounds with a friendly face from Dallas, who just so happens to be one of the top amateurs in the country in Jordan Spieth.
A junior at Jesuit Prep, Spieth is the reigning U.S. Junior Amateur champion and was given a sponsor's exemption to play in the HP Byron Nelson Championship in May. How good is Spieth? Some other amateur golfers granted exemptions include Tiger Woods (1993), Justin Leonard ('93) and Trip Kuehne ('95).
Romo has finished 34th and 36th in his first two forays into the Azalea. Word has it that Romo's game is in pretty good shape entering this tournament.
By the way, shouldn't the Nelson consider granting Romo an exemption?
He has attempted to qualify for the tournament the last few years, coming close a couple of times. This year's tournament runs May 20-23, which is normally right around some organized team activities. The Cowboys have not released a schedule of off-season events yet.
I understand some golf purists might not like the thought of Romo taking a pro's spot in the field, but in terms of generating interest Romo would be a huge boost for the event.
OK, let those who hate Romo doing anything but studying, lifting and throwing every waking moment of the off-season have at it.
