Tony Romo looks back, looks ahead

For Tony Romo, the preparation for 2010 began last week. He took a week off after the loss to Minnesota and was back working out the following week.

As he watched the NFC Championship Game, he thought about the Cowboys playing in the game.

"I mean watching the games last weekend, which I didn't know I was going to do, I found myself emotionally invested a little bit as the game was going on," Romo said. "It still leaves a bad taste with the way the season ended and we didn't accomplish what we set out to do. But in saying that you go back to work and you get excited about the possibilities that lay ahead."

For the last few years, Romo and the Cowboys had to answer questions about whether he and they could win in December and end the franchise's playoff drought. He and they did that. Now the question becomes whether the Cowboys can take the next step and be a Super Bowl team.

"That's good because that means the expectations are higher," Romo said. "If you're expectations aren't a Super Bowl, then you're probably not doing the things the right way. We're not playing this game just to make the playoffs and have a good time. It's about getting better, winning Super Bowls and being the player you can be and enjoying the process."

Tony Romo expects Roy Williams numbers to improve

Last year Roy Williams and Tony Romo began their off-season workouts two weeks earlier than most of their teammates in hopes of building a better on-field chemistry.

It never really materialized in 2009 with Williams catching 38 passes for 596 yards and seven touchdowns.

Romo said he and Williams will be back on the practice field earlier than normal this off-season to get better in 2010. Romo said too much emphasis was put on Williams' statistics and not the little things he did to help the Cowboys win games but Jerry Jones did not give up all that he did to get Williams for his blocking ability.

"That production side will continue to grow each year with the more familiarity with the offense for me and him," Romo said. "There's lot of things that go into it. His routes could be a little different than somebody else's and sometimes you need more time to throw certain routes to him and sometimes there's less time. Whatever it is. There's a million things that go into it. You always look at the production side but I don't necessarily think that. The big part of it is throwing and catching and we'll do that again this off-season and we'll be better this next season and not just me and him but all of us."

While Williams said he felt like he lost the confidence of Romo and assistant head coach Jason Garrett, the quarterback said he remains confident in the wide receiver.

"Honestly you're not going to be on the field if I don't feel comfortable in that regard as a guy playing a skill position," Romo said. "You have to have a rapport with the guys around you. I feel very comfortable with Roy, Miles, Jason. The same reason you're comfortable with whatever running back that's in the game. We're not going in saying, 'Well, I hope.' You can't. We'll continue to get better as we go along."

Tony Romo on his leadership role

Throughout last season much was made of Tony Romo being a different guy, especially when it came to leadership.

Romo was more animated during the game and on the sidelines, and he made the players more accountable in practice.

"It's like the sophomore kid in high school who's the quarterback and there's a lot of older kids," Romo said. "It's hard to tell them what to do when they've been through the fire, through these games and they know the process whereas you're just learning. With me, it's no different as becoming that junior and senior. You're able to grab a hold of the offensive team and let people know what you expect. It's just a maturation process that you expect."

So is he a senior?

"I'm deep in my sophomore year," Romo joked.

You've been in the offense for 3 years Romo.

I'm glad to hear this from Romo, unlike the remarks that he made last year.

They need just as much time, if not more, in film study togehter to break down and better understand the passes that Williams thought should go his way but where Tony went elsewhere with the ball.

Yeah Tony changed the talk this year. He improved his political correctness.

But Tony has been the same throughout his Cowboys career. Always 100% committed, always working to get better.

I agree, but just wait until the first picture of him playing golf or partying shows up. This forum will erupt!

No kidding and if he meets a woman and dates her all hell will break loose. :lmao2:

After all My Tony Romo in the Madden game only plays football he has no life outside of football. :lmao2:

Looking at last off season Romo played in the celebrity golf tournaments and would from time to time be in one of the who wants to know magazines even managed a quick trip to Vegas on out bye week, yet he went out and had a very good season.

Romo always says the right things but I wonder how he speaks of Roy in private. Even though they swept the, 'he throws passes better to other receivers' comments under the rug - I'm sure that really had to piss him off.

Thing is RW never said that as a knock on Romo. Truth is Romo and other WR were showing better timing with each other than what RW and Romo where showing. No doubt RW had passes way behind him, over him but it takes 2 to make it happen RW is as much to blame if not more but I never took that comment as Romo being at fault.

I perceived it differently. And as much as Roy gets blasted by the media and fans, had T.O. made those comments Ed Werder would've been camped outside of Valley Ranch for a month.

Yeah, I said the same thing a while back. I think studying film together will do them more good than going out and playing pitch and catch.

It was obvious that a lot of times Williams would see the coverage and think he needed to go one way while Romo expected him to go another.

I'm not worried about Williams' hands because I believe a lot of the drops were a product of him pressing. But he and Romo have to get a feel for what they expect each other to do when the coverage does this or that.

That's not something they are going to learn playing catch.

I agree that had TO said it the media would have jumped on that very hard however much of that has to do with a past history of TO. RW has also said it is his job to gain the confidence of Romo and Garrett not their job.

In the meantime he is not pouting and throwing hissy fits he has continued to work and try and contribute when and where he can. Hopefully he can get it together next year because if he does not then chances are it will be his last in Dallas. For me I would rather see this thing pan out than not.

So is Roy now the cool guy to root for again? Someone wake me up when he gets traded.

I root for him to get it together and produce because it is better for the team if he does than if he doesn't.
