After a sleepless night following the Philly Flop, Wade Phillips vowed to get tougher on his team.

That doesn't mean Phillips will morph into a screaming, facemask-grabbing maniac. He's well aware that players wouldn't buy a drastic personality change.

The biggest changes will be behind the scenes. For example, after this morning's practice, Phillips stressed to the players the importance of keeping up their conditioning program before training camp. If they come in heavy, their wallets will be lighter.

Each player will be given a target weight. Phillips indicated that the players who come in above those weights will be fined the league maximum of $453 per pound. That's a major change, considering the minimal fines given out by the Cowboys last year.

"I expect them to be in the best shape they've been in," Phillips said. "That's part of being accountable - not only to their teammates, but to themselves."

Speaking of being overweight, I'll be back after a lunch break.

This is a great opportunity for Wade to lead by example in more than just one way. If Wade came into camp $22,650 worth his own self I am sure it would go a long way with the players. In other words, Wade could stand to drop 50 lbs or so to demonstrate that he lives by the words he preaches, and that no one is exempt from the rules when the fines get handed out.

He should have been doing this all along. Better late than never i guess.

If you remember from the flap about players being late for the charter flights, Jerry Jones supposedly overruled him on some fine situations last year. It might be the case he wanted to hold their feet to the fire but what prevented from doing so.

I can certainly see your point, but his weight doesn't directly effect his ability to coach, whereas, a player's weight does directly effect the way he plays.

Good point. How come everyone except Jones knows it is bad policy for him to overrule the head coach?

Jerry's shortcomings certainly cause problems, but I'm not sure anything is more destructive than this. Overruling the head coach when it comes to discipline matters eats at the core of the entire structure of the organization.

450 per pound?

I'm sure the gluttons are shaking in their boots.

Let's hope Jerry has seen the light. Sure looks like it after this offseason.

My point was that there is an opportunity to meld more with the players and exhibit more commitment regarding team rules, not that his weight was tied to his coaching ability.

So guys that are overweight will starve themselves or take water pills, a few days earlier, to make weight. Doesn’t mean they will be in better shape. I thought that was what training camp was for...to get into football shape? I mean, if you work their guys butts off...they WILL LOSE WEIGHT!

I watch the Irvin show and he puts them under some serious conditioning, i would love to see that in the Cowboys camp. But all you see are guys with tons of energy left over to joke around and do stupid dances.

Yeah. You are right they should walk around like robots and not enjoy themselves every once in a while.

Maybe Dallas should listen to What Chuck Noll would tell his players.

If I have to motivate you I don't need you on this team these were the words he spoke in 74 shortly after his teams won 4 SB titles. Grown men making millions playing a game needs to be able to motivate themselves if they need someone over their shoulders at all times then chances are we need to replace that player.

Well i am sorry it is how it is. Some guys don't need to be motivated. Some dude. Its life. This isn't that era anymore. We are in the era of the spoiled athlete.

By your logic the whole team will be "worrying about losing pounds" rather than their primary purpose as well, I am sure Wade and the players can act on and achieve more than one thought at a time.

again, just clarifying my original point about more opportunity than meets the eye. If there is a team rule about taking cellphone calls in meetings than Wade should be accountable lead the players by example there too if his phone rings, this is not about his weight personally.

As I said then maybe that player needs to be replaced at the 1st chance. I don't see the fans needing motivation why should a player making millions need it. As for this is not that era? People have not changed that much and when Noll made that comment the next thing he did was start releasing players.

Players primary purpose is conditioning first. So that "my" logic tactic you turn on me doesn't make sense. Coaching is hard enough. He also the defensive coach. He doesn't need to bench press to make a point.

And yet Wade is one of the fattest pigs in NFL history. Way to lead by example, tubbo.

Coach is not playing the game. His job is to get the team ready that is what he is attempting to do.
