Davis' 53-man projection

7:27 PM Fri, Aug 29, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Brian Davis

Todd, Calvin and Tim have weighed in. Here's my take on what the 53-man roster looks like.

QB (2)
Tony Romo
Brad Johnson
Comment: Richard Bartel's had a great run, but the team will scour the waiver wire. Pencil me in for Quarterback TBD on the practice squad. Worse case scenario, you've got Patrick Crayton.

RB/FB (4)
Marion Barber
Felix Jones
Tashard Choice
Deon "Cricket/Pit Bull" Anderson
Comment: No big surprises here. Here's a somewhat crazy prediction: Jones will dazzle, but Choice will also do something in September to really boost his stock.

WR (6)
Terrell Owens
Patrick Crayton
Sam Hurd
Miles Austin
Isaiah Stanback
Mike Jefferson
Comment: Danny Amendola makes the team for the first week while Hurd, Austin and Stanback recover from injuries.

TE (3)
Jason Witten
Martellus Bennett
Tony Curtis
Comment: Bennett needs to keep progressing so the Cowboys can use Witten more as a receiver in September.

OL (10)
Flozell Adams
Kyle Kosier
Andre Gurode
Leonard Davis
Marc Colombo
Montrae Holland
Pat McQuistan
Doug Free
Cory Procter
Joe Berger
Comment: Make no mistake, Holland was brought in to start in place of Kosier. If he doesn't, I'd be really surprised.

DL (6)
Jay Ratliff
Chris Canty
Marcus Spears
Tank Johnson
Jason Hatcher
Stephen Bowen
Comment: I'm not sure that it matters who plays inside at nose tackle and who plays on the end.

LB (9)
DeMarcus Ware
Greg Ellis
Zach Thomas
Bradie James
Kevin Burnett
Bobby Carpenter
Anthony Spencer
Justin Rogers
Erik Walden
Comment: If Burnett doesn't come back healthy and Carpenter doesn't step up, then depth could be a problem early.

CB (6)
Terence Newman
Anthony Henry
Adam Jones
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Alan Ball
Comment: The one who really flew around hitting people in August was Scandrick. He'll see lots of action on third down as the season goes on.

S (4)
Roy Williams
Ken Hamlin
Pat Watkins
Courtney Brown
Comment: Do you put Dowayne Davis on the practice squad to save a backup safety and a special teams guy?

Special teams (3)
Nick Folk
Mat McBriar
L.P. Ladouceur
Comment: What? You were expecting Raphel Septien, Mike Saxon and Dale Hellestrae?

QB

Tony Romo
Brad Johnson
Comment: Richard Bartel will get cut and he deserves another year on the practice squad.

Comment: Choice is a solid No. 3.
FB

Comment: Keon Lattimore or Julius Crosslin could stay on the practice squad.

Tony Curtis
Martellus Bennett
Comment: Rodney Hannah needed to play well on all special teams units to make the 53.
WR

Terrell Owens
Patrick Crayton
Sam Hurd
Miles Austin
Isaiah Stanback
Mike Jefferson
Comment: Expect the Cowboys to sign a wide receiver in place of Jefferson and then put him on the practice squad.
OL

C Andre Gurode
RG Leonard Davis
RT Marc Colombo
T/G Pat McQuistan
G Montrae Holland

Comment: Erik Walden is on the bubble and he didn't make it.

How can they put George on waivers? Teams want pass rushers, including Dallas.

Todd, Calvin and Tim have weighed in. Here's my take on what the 53-man roster looks like.

My take:

QB (2)
Tony Romo
Brad Johnson
Comment: Richard Bartel's had a great run, but the team will scour the waiver wire. Pencil me in for Quarterback TBD on the practice squad. Worse case scenario, you've got Patrick Crayton.

Bartel goes to PS. He's shown enough to be here. I'm not certain he'll get thru waivers though. If they like him enough then he'll make the 53. I see that as a distinct possibility even though I don't like it.

RB/FB (4)
Marion Barber
Felix Jones
Tashard Choice
Deon "Cricket/Pit Bull" Anderson
Comment: No big surprises here. Here's a somewhat crazy prediction: Jones will dazzle, but Choice will also do something in September to really boost his stock.

Lattimore will go to the PS altho he may get picked up as well. He's better than TT ever was but not better than TC. If they think he can play FB some then he could make the roster. I doubt it though.

WR (6)
Terrell Owens
Patrick Crayton
Sam Hurd
Miles Austin
Isaiah Stanback
Mike Jefferson
Comment: Danny Amendola makes the team for the first week while Hurd, Austin and Stanback recover from injuries.

I think they will push Stanback to IR. That gives Amendola a spot on the team until and if they acquire a vet WR after week one. Austin they wait on.

TE (3)
Jason Witten
Martellus Bennett
Tony Curtis
Comment: Bennett needs to keep progressing so the Cowboys can use Witten more as a receiver in September.

Hannah has a chance to make the team. He plays STs and has the skills to play in this league. He just needs this year to develop. They may keep four TEs.

OL (10)
Flozell Adams
Kyle Kosier
Andre Gurode
Leonard Davis
Marc Colombo
Montrae Holland
Pat McQuistan
Doug Free
Cory Procter
Joe Berger
Comment: Make no mistake, Holland was brought in to start in place of Kosier. If he doesn't, I'd be really surprised.

I don't see Holland as THE starter for Kosier. He may be. He might not be. Not sure on the OL who goes and who stays.

DL (6)
Jay Ratliff
Chris Canty
Marcus Spears
Tank Johnson
Jason Hatcher
Stephen Bowen
Comment: I'm not sure that it matters who plays inside at nose tackle and who plays on the end.

Ditto. Tank will become the starter at some point although it won't matter except to the players. Bowen may play more this year. Not sure about Hatcher. Canty ready to take off. Spears has.

LB (9)
DeMarcus Ware
Greg Ellis
Zach Thomas
Bradie James
Kevin Burnett
Bobby Carpenter
Anthony Spencer
Justin Rogers
Erik Walden
Comment: If Burnett doesn't come back healthy and Carpenter doesn't step up, then depth could be a problem early.

Walden goes to PS or they trade a player. George makes the team and Smith goes to PS with Walder. IMO.

CB (6)
Terence Newman
Anthony Henry
Adam Jones
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Alan Ball
Comment: The one who really flew around hitting people in August was Scandrick. He'll see lots of action on third down as the season goes on.

Olgesby has made the 53 and likely will be active on gameday. Not sure if Ball makes it. Scandrick is outplaying Jones and Jenkins right now. Adam will pass him at some point but Scandrick will push for more playing time.

S (4)
Roy Williams
Ken Hamlin
Pat Watkins
Courtney Brown
Comment: Do you put Dowayne Davis on the practice squad to save a backup safety and a special teams guy?

Davis probably goes to PS. He has a chance to make the team only if they keep five safeties. Don't see it right now but we don't know how valuable Davis is on STs.

Special teams (3)
Nick Folk
Mat McBriar
L.P. Ladouceur
Comment: What? You were expecting Raphel Septien, Mike Saxon and Dale Hellestrae?

four or five bubble players.

Good job!

Amendola isn't listed because he will be released when Hurd comes back, glad to see you can read.

Same here. There's no doubt he stood out that game, if he gets cut, I say there's little chance he clears waivers. Kinda feeling like Matt Moore again.

When's the last time you ever saw anyone do what he did? Some NYG DE last year. Name another. I'm sure there are a few games like that. He may have punked up the rest of camp and they may dismiss it but I kinda doubt it. Maybe he never makes anything of himself in this league. Want him to go somewhere else and prove us wrong?? He's huge and fast. I have no idea why he didn't do this earlier.

Yeah, I want George to make the team too. I haven't seen squat out of Walden even against 2nd & 3rd stringers.

I also want to keep Tyson Smith on the practice squad. He looked like, in time, he could be a pretty good coverage LB. If he can learn to recognize plays and get to the ball carrier quickly he will be a keeper.

Unless Ball is clearly outplaying Ogelsby in special teams, he's not making the team over him. Ogelsby is performing far and away better than Ball as a corner.

Oglesby over Ball for CB and I'd be surprised if Free isn't gone as bad as he has been.
