Watkins on practice

Calvin Watkins

Spirited practice today.

Of course, everybody is talking about Terrell Owens' double-move on Adam Jones leading to a touchdown. But Jones looked rusty all day. He fell down while covering Owens on another route and he probably needs to just relax and settle down.

Once he does that he'll be fine. Jones said he still doesn't know the defense. I asked him does he need a few preseason games to find a flow and he said, smiling, "all I need is a couple of more practices, I'll be all right."

Alonzo Coleman is struggling. The running back took the wrong route during a kick coverage drill. The drill is designed for every player to hit somebody and Coleman didn't touch anybody. Tight ends coach John Stewart got on Coleman about it.
Tony Romo looks really good right now. He's hitting, not everybody, but a good percentage of his receivers. He found Terrell Owens get behind the defense for a touchdown, Patrick Watkins was trailing the play.

Rookie tight end Martellus Bennett drew a pass interference call on linebacker Bradie James. Bennett looks a little raw, needs to make sharper cuts during his routes. But Bennett did look good on his blocks on some special teams drills.

Felix Jones, the rookie running back, ran smoothly and lined up wide for a pass play. But he slipped down as the primary receiver on one route, prompting Tony Romo to look for his second option, and when that was covered up, he threw the ball away. Jones was impressive on a kickoff return drill. When getting through the hole, Jones covered up the ball so no one would strip him as he ran down the field.

"Tight ends coach John Stewart"

I have a question. Nevermind.

Funny, cause looking at Bennett's highlights from college, I saw the same thing. He didn't seem explosive to me in the least, and looked like someone stuck a stick up his butt after the catch, virtually no moves to be seen. Most of his routes seemed to be pretty short as well, dump offs in the flat or shallow crosses, as opposed to actual routes.

He's certainly got his work cut out for him, I hope he's up to it.

Felix still has alot of work to do to become a polished pass catcher, no matter what the hype says. Hopefully he develops fast in this role. As for covering up the ball on kickoff returns, Mr. Calvin Watkins, he has always done that, did it in college, nothing new there.

That's Francione's offense for you... It's no indictment of the player.

I'm not so sure, watching what he did after he somehow managed to get the ball in his hands seems like it says something about him to me. Certainly the lack of development as a true receiving threat may be the fault of the coaching and the scheme, but when he actually did get the ball, he didn't look special to me.
