What did Bradie James mean when he said Cowboys can't be Patriots?

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Bradie James' quote comparing the Cowboys to the Patriots in Tom Curran's nbcsports.com story is getting a lot of play. Peter King picked it up for this week's Monday Morning Quarterback, and I heard the Ticket's morning guys talking about it during my drive to Valley Ranch today.

"We can't be the Patriots," he allows. "The Patriots, they epitomize the whole team concept. Those guys are all about team and that's it. We're not them. We are a team that has a bunch of names, a bunch of personalities and a bunch of youth. We are learning what it takes to win at the right time."
I wasn't quite sure what to make of the quote, so I asked James to elaborate/clarify.

"We can't be those guys. We have to be ourselves," James said. "We have to find a way to make it work and embody the whole team concept, being the Dallas Cowboys and not how they did it out there in New England.

"As long as we kick the egos out the door and come together as a team, we'll be fine. We have enough names to really do whatever it is we need to do, but there's a flip side to that. You've got enough names to take us to the next level, and you've got enough names to tear this thing down.

"Like I've been saying, the only name that really counts is the Dallas Cowboys. If we can embody that and come together, we'll be fine. "

I believe he wants to be the Dallas Cowboys who DO NOT choke in the Super Bowl once we get there.

Again I say... Bradie isn't that bright. Sometimes I wonder about him as the "leader" on defense.

Interesting that he would say that. Maybe some guys are being bugged by all of this nonsense.

this is going to be a telling season.

If I have to translate, I think he means that the Cowboys are loaded talent-wise to which the Patriots haven't always been. They've got a great quarterback, coach, and solid defense, and they execute.

The Cowboys have talent up and down the roster, full of pro bowl names...and Cowboys ability to come together as a team is more about keeping the egos in check than it is question marks on the roster.

At least I think he means that.

Mind reading is my hobby. :)

well it's all relative. If not for injuries, this team would not have very many question marks.

Srsly, the biggest debate since TC began has been about backups...

The Cowboys and Patriots both lost to the Giants in their quest to be superbowl champions.

I didnt mean it like you are the one declaring it!!

I am just saying i think alot of these phrases have been getting thrown around and I am afraid they skew peoples mindsets and the media's perception.

We are a talented team. I think part of talent is accomplishment. this team is on the upswing and I personally am a believer in the theory that you have to lose big before you win big. I think we are right where we want to be.

I think though that people have this perception that we are more talented than philly, washington and the giants. I personally dont believe that is the case. I know people will jump on me for that, but that is how I feel.

Since coughlin has shown up in ny I have felt like they were being built just like us and have the exact talent and skill players we have.

again I think we are very talented, but Not any more than the rest of the nfc east and really not much more than green bay, seattle or new orleans.

Bradie James Explains His Comment to NBCSports.com

Cowboys linebacker Bradie James was recently quoted as saying to NBCsports.com, “We can't be the Patriots. The Patriots, they epitomize the whole team concept. Those guys are all about team and that's it. We're not them. We are a team that has a bunch of names, a bunch of personalities and a bunch of youth.”

On Monday, James tried to explain that it wasn’t a slam on the Cowboys. James feels that because the team name is “Cowboys” it tends to make a star out of everybody. But he wants people to buy in to the team concept.

“As long as we kick the egos out the door we’ll be fine,” James said Tuesday. “You’ve got enough names here to take this to the next level. You’ve got enough names here to tear this thing down. We’ve been doing a good job with all the things going on. Guys have stepped up and not been distracted. We’re doing a better than I thought we would, so far.”

Exactly. Why would anyone think we are so much more talented than those teams... Or Indy, or San Diego, or New England, or Pittsburg, or Jacksonville...

And if we are more talented than them, it's only by a tiny margin.

It makes no sense to me. I think people only think we're "so talented" because of all the attention we get, and the Pro Bowls last year. But we all know how fickle and unreliable Pro Bowl voting is.

(But I will disagree on one thing... We are more talented than Washington. ;))

We both got beat by the Giants.

We both won games last year we shouldn't have.

We were ahead of them in the 3rd quarter of our game with them.

How far away do you think we are?

yeah I think you can make a case that we have a more polished roster than washington. If campbell continues to get better and their secondary finds a way to be decent I think its a push.

the east is going to be so much fun this year.

I get what you're saying, but I don't totally buy the theory that acknowledging a team's talent is related to the team's accomplishments. A team can be talented and still underachieve...and so far this one has. But it doesn't take anything away from the overall talent of some of the individual players.

BTW, Coughlin is a Parcells disciple...that's why that team somewhat mirrors the Cowboys. Pre-romo, question mark at the QB spot, solid running game, elite TE, and solid WRs. Take away names and you could pick either team. They don't mirror one another as much now, but there are still similarities.

they won 18 games last year and lost only one(unfortunetly for them it was the bowl) they have been to 4 out of the last 7 superbowls winning 3 of them. we haven't won a playoff game in 11 or 12 years. were pretty far away from them right now.

You must be joking? All the first round talent on the Defense, all the Pro Bowlers on offense. Hell you could make a team out of just the backups, look at Miami. Dallas is head and shoulders stacked with talent more than any team in the NFC.

Yep no doubt. As parcells has said many times he pulled coughlin off of a field in rochester! I dont think coughlin goes about things the same way per se but construction of the roster is very similar. Same with belichick.

coughlin being a special teams coach by trade has always kept that roster to where the special teams are as important as the offense, like parcells did. their units are always very good.

Im not joking. Once guys are drafted, personally i dont care where they came from. Its results oriented and development oriented.

the quality of backups speaks to good drafting and jerry's large wallet and they are the backbone of special teams but I think other teams in this divsion have showed they have good backups too, they are not as hyped as much though.

I just dont see us more talented than philly or ny in any scenario and in the other teams I mentioned. Seattle and washington we are probably more talented, in some respect but not so much that you just roll in walk on the field collect your win and go.
