Jerry Jones' strong hint that the Cowboys are interested in West Virginia QB/ATH Pat White could be a misdirection ploy.
But, for the sake of argument, let's assume that the Cowboys are serious about searching for a developmental QB with the skills to make an impact in the Wildcat right away. In other words, they really want White.
DMN draft guru Rick "Goose" Gosselin projects White to be drafted in the middle rounds, so the Cowboys would be reaching if they took him in the second round or with their early third-rounder that they got from the Browns.
The Cowboys have five picks in the fourth and fifth rounds: the first pick of the fourth via Detroit, their own fourth-rounder, their own fifth-rounder, a late fifth-rounder via Tennessee and a compensatory pick near the end of the fifth round. They have three picks in the sixth and seventh rounds that can be used as trade bait to try to move up, plus a compensatory sixth that can't be traded.
When would it make sense to pull the trigger on White?
If the Cowboys are serious about the Wildcat, it'd probably be tough to pass on White if he's available to begin the fourth round. With as many picks as the Cowboys have, it might make sense to move up into the mid- to late third to make sure they get the guy who would add a major wrinkle to the offense.
