Where the Cowboys stand
With two games left in Week 12, here's where the Cowboys stand in the various races they're running in:
NFC EAST
With the division laying a big old egg early today, and one game left for East teams, the Cowboys have strengthened their position. In effect, their magic number is 2. They could clinch by this time next week, with a win over the Packers and a loss by the Giants in Chicago. For the Commanders or Eagles to win the division, they'd need to win out and have the Cowboys go 0-5.
PLAYOFFS
If the Eagles lose tonight, then the winner of the Packers-Cowboys game will be the first NFC team to lock up a spot in the postseason. And Patriots CB Asante Samuel just returned a pick for a touchdown, so that's looking like it's going to be a reality.
PLAYOFF POSITIONING
With the mediocrity of the South and West, it's long looked like a certainty that no matter who won the Cowboys-Packers showdown, both teams would get a bye. Don't look now, but the Bucs and Seahawks have caught fire, so that may not be the sure thing everyone thought it was. Both are 7-4 and riding three-game winning streaks, meaning Thursday's loser will only be two games ahead in the loss column.
Neither the Packers nor the Cowboys have beaten either of them, so that means tiebreakers could come into play. But the Bucs' schedule allows for the possibility of an 8-0 finish. The Seahawks schedule is a little tougher, though with the experience that team has, it shouldn't be ruled out for them either.
