Where was Ware?

That's what I was wondering after Eli Manning lit up the Cowboys for 312 yards and four touchdowns. DeMarcus Ware was credited for two hurries, but he wasn't close to the beast expected to be unleashed in the Phillips 3-4.

In an effort to have an educated take, I charted what happened to Ware on all 46 Giants dropbacks while I watched the game again on my TiVo.
A major reason Ware didn't make a bigger impact is because Manning got rid of the ball quickly. I counted 10 times that Ware got decent or good pressure. But I was surprised that the Giants didn't seem to go out of their way to account for Ware with their blocking scheme.

Ware dropped back into coverage nine times. Follow the jump for the blocking breakdown of the 37 times he rushed the passer:

22 1-on-1's with LT David Diehl or RT Kareem McKenzie -- Got decent or good pressure eight times, including a hit that caused an incompletion and a grab of Manning's back collar that caused another. Seven of the eight decent/good pressures came in the second half, when the tackles were alone against Ware 16 times.

Three vs. tackle with help -- Didn't get pressure on any of these. Got chipped by RB while rushing vs. LT on 60-yard TD pass. Was chipped by TE once and LG gave late help the other time.

Four times alone on RB, TE or H-back Forced a hurried dump-off to Jeremy Shockey when Shockey whiffed on him. Chipped by RB Derrick Ward on 9-yard TD to him on a screen pass. Cut by RB on one quick-hitter. Handled by H-back on another.

Once chipped by TE to help RB -- Manning got rid of ball quickly after three-step drop.

Once unblocked -- Sucked upfield on screen pass.

Six inside stunts, picked up by guard, center or combination -- Looked like he got held on the play where Nate Jones hit Manning. Didn't cause disruption on any other stunts.

Conclusion: Ware performed like a pretty good player, and that's how the Giants treated him. The Cowboys need him to be a game-changing, scheme-altering monster.

And this is where I thought Ware was guilty of not stepping up enough....Another poster suggested he was mostly double teamed, a point I didn't notice although I didn't review the DVR thoroughly...From what I recalled, he was several times matched up 1 on 1 and failed to penetrate...THAT is what surprised me.

Nice work, btw.

On 46 pass plays he was in coverage 9 times. 9 times. If he doesn't rack up sacks this year, he's not very good.

It seems like our guys are always half a second too slow. You gotta give Eli credit though, he was getting rid of the ball pretty quick. Let's hope we give Green hell on Sunday.

Ware is a concern, but we had many other players not step up.

Example:
I actually studied Roy Williams when he was close to the LOS, where he is supposed to be a beast that kills everyone in his way.

More times than not, he would see the ball carrier on a running play, and go attack the blocker on the right side of the RB instead of the RB himself.

Mind boggling!

Ware didn't have the game I expected out of him... He's got a lot more games to show the NFL he's consistantly dominant.

The Giants used a lot of quick drops.

Quick drops can negate a pass rush no matter what some folks think.

the most frustrating part is that the quick drops still resulted in long pass plays... which means our secondary cannot cover for more than half a second.

How many times was Ware held?
He looked close a few times... was a hold responsible for him not getting there in time? and if so... how many times?

Its hard to sack the QB when he is taking 3 step drops and throwing it to receivers who were given 10-15 yard cushions.

Ware cant do this by himself. The secondary's ability to cover is just as important to the pass rush as the pass rush is important to how effective the seconday is.

3 step drops keep sacks from happening. Big coverage cushions allow 3 step drops to work. As Vela said there is a symbosis in all of this and our defense on Sunday night was not zen like!

I would like Ware to step up, but I have always thought the Giants had a very good offensive line. Good Offensive Line w/ quick 3 step drops will hurt a pass rush. Though the quick throws shouldn't be going for 20 yds. Honestly though, getting sacks is also about someone on the opposite side flushing someone to your side. Hopefully Spencer will learn quickly and start getting pressure. He has already made more big plays then Carp made as a rookie.

On a lighter note: This is the most research I have ever seen Tim do. Looks more like something a someone on the board would do.

I agree with you DMQ, Spencer is already produced more in one game than Carp has to date.

He seemed to have that killer instinct in him in the second half and there were at least two times where both Spencer and Ware were heading to an Eli sandwich but Eli took a 3 step drop and well that was that. Was cool to see two OLBs playing meet me at the QB.

I noticed that. On one play it was very visible. Roy steps up as the guard is coming through the hole and instead of attacking the RB he steps right and engages the lineman.

3 step drops..........that is where Ratlif, Spears and Canty gotta bust thru and disprut things....................

Gints were very firm/solid in the interior Line and with Ware/Spenser taking outside routes to QB which will be deeper in Arc.........gonna be tough....

Tackels for Gints just made sure Ware went wide and Eli able to stay up inside the pocket.......

Cant remember the Mid-LB'rs being involved in pass defense>.....?????
with continuous 3 step drops,,,,,,,,,be better blitzing James etc right up the gut..........to jump the 3 step routes

Gotta figure other teams gonna copy that pattern..........

Now this board is bashing ware.

k...

I would like to see all these charters explain the defensive alignments, coverage responsibities and then what happens to those responsibilities when the giants shifted and use motion.

Until one of the charters can explain that, I am quite sure demarcus ware is a very good player.

Unbelievable.
