Where was Ware?
That's what I was wondering after Eli Manning lit up the Cowboys for 312 yards and four touchdowns. DeMarcus Ware was credited for two hurries, but he wasn't close to the beast expected to be unleashed in the Phillips 3-4.
In an effort to have an educated take, I charted what happened to Ware on all 46 Giants dropbacks while I watched the game again on my TiVo.
A major reason Ware didn't make a bigger impact is because Manning got rid of the ball quickly. I counted 10 times that Ware got decent or good pressure. But I was surprised that the Giants didn't seem to go out of their way to account for Ware with their blocking scheme.
Ware dropped back into coverage nine times. Follow the jump for the blocking breakdown of the 37 times he rushed the passer:
22 1-on-1's with LT David Diehl or RT Kareem McKenzie -- Got decent or good pressure eight times, including a hit that caused an incompletion and a grab of Manning's back collar that caused another. Seven of the eight decent/good pressures came in the second half, when the tackles were alone against Ware 16 times.
Three vs. tackle with help -- Didn't get pressure on any of these. Got chipped by RB while rushing vs. LT on 60-yard TD pass. Was chipped by TE once and LG gave late help the other time.
Four times alone on RB, TE or H-back Forced a hurried dump-off to Jeremy Shockey when Shockey whiffed on him. Chipped by RB Derrick Ward on 9-yard TD to him on a screen pass. Cut by RB on one quick-hitter. Handled by H-back on another.
Once chipped by TE to help RB -- Manning got rid of ball quickly after three-step drop.
Once unblocked -- Sucked upfield on screen pass.
Six inside stunts, picked up by guard, center or combination -- Looked like he got held on the play where Nate Jones hit Manning. Didn't cause disruption on any other stunts.
Conclusion: Ware performed like a pretty good player, and that's how the Giants treated him. The Cowboys need him to be a game-changing, scheme-altering monster.
