Will Asomugha come available?

With news coming from a myriad of places now that the Raiders have agreed to send second- and sixth-round picks to Atlanta for DeAngelo Hall, another question will arise in Oakland: What to do with Nnamdi Asomugha?

The Hall trade is contigent on the discontented Falcon corner coming to terms on a long-term deal with the Raiders. The numbers are expected to be in the neighborhood of what Asante Samuel got (six years, $57 million) in Philadelphia. And that could make it difficult for the Raiders to hold on to Asomugha, who's been slapped with the exclusive franchise tag in Oakland.

For one thing, because it's the exclusive tag, Asomugha's price will continue to rise with each monster deal a corner signs, with the number inching closer to $10 million. Pro Football Talk speculated earlier today that this, plus the acquisition of Hall, could cause Oakland to repeal the tag on Asomugha.

Some believe that the money just won't be out there this late in the game for Asomugha. I disagree. Vehemently. Asomugha, in my mind, is the closest thing there is to Champ Bailey outside of Denver, was the clear No. 1 on the market before he got tagged (over Samuel and also-franchised Marcus Trufant), and is four months shy of his 27th birthday.

As is the case with Bailey, his ability to play all coverages and lock on to most receivers one-on-one without a coach thinking twice about it is what sets him apart from almost every other corner in the league. There's a reason he was only thrown at 31 times last year, a total that a scout told Pro Football Weekly was "less than any defender I've seen in the last 10 years."

That's why I think teams will line up to get this guy, if he becomes available. The Cowboys would have trouble getting involved, because of cap constraints. But this just might be a guy where you do what it takes.

Please, oh please let the Raiders overpay for Hall and take the tag off Asomugha. Nevermind Pacman hopefully Dallas will go after Asomugha.

I hope we sign Asomugha for two reasons.

1. We need him

2. No more Pacman threads

No more Pacman threads? Why? Asomugha, Newman and Pacman (at league Min for 2 years) That would be amazing! We could trade henry and save cap space there. We wouldn't have to use a #1 on CB. it would be the best move to make.
I mean I think Asomugha, Newman and Pacman are all better then Henry. And if we could have Pacman cheaper then Henry why not? He is cheaper and an upgrade sounds good to me.

It would be very interesting to see what would happen if Oakland removed the tag. I wonder if Jones would go after him. He'll cost a ton, but he'd be someone that could actually replace Henry immediately, and maybe make Henry expendable. Not sure if that frees us any cap space for us or not, if it did it might be a move that makes sense.

Otherwise, it'd be nice to have NA but it probably wouldnt happen

An interesting question is if the Cowboys did somehow sign Nnamdi, how it would effect Newman's future?

Would you sign Asomugha if it meant that Newman left next year?

Interesting dilemna....

I think if there was a way to find money to get Nnamdi, you almost certainly have to let Newman walk next year as we'll be flipping couch cushions for spare change.

Teams have gotten pretty creative w/ the cap over the years. If a team feels they are close enough to a championship and aren't already in cap hell, they'll find ways to sign a guy or two whom they feel can put him over the top. Signing him will also allow us much more freedom in the draft.

before he is let go, Davis would get the best deal possible with a team. He is worth at least a top draft choice or two and several teams would most defintely pay that.

Exactly!

you guys must be out of your minds to take Asomugha over newman, don't get me wrong, he is a great player, but not newman caliber

oh let me guess what the argument is gonna be "he is 3 years younger than newman" BS....in 3 years we will be looking at the same BS with Asomugha, he may even slow down when he hits 30, Newman has shown no signs of that yet

we could keep Newman for another 3-5 years in great condition, with less milage on him, Draft a few corners here and there until we strike gold

who knows Cason, Talib, Jenkins...who ever we get might be a Newman type, or better than Asomugha.....

Aso, just started to blow up after being in the league for 5 years + he is good, but lets not break the bank on him

I wonder how many times the ball was thrown Newmans way or the % thrown towards Henry/Reeves last year.

I don't know the exact number, but it was confirmed that Reeves was the most targeted CB in the leaugue

1. Newman is the closest thing to Bailey or vice versa.

2. I believe the Raiders put the rare "Exclusive Tag" on Asomugha which I believe is similar to the Franchise Tag. So not only would a team have to pay a lot for Asomugha, I believe they would also give up 2 first rounders. Even for a shutdown corner, unless it's Deion Sanders and while Asomugha has been great the past two years he's no Deion, that's probably too much to be giving up.

3. There's a reason why Asomugha was only thrown at 31 times last year. A big part of it is his skill, the other part of it is the rest of the Oakland corners where some of the worst in the NFL. The case is made against Newman because he has Henry, but Henry has proven to be in the top half of CB's over the years. Plus, you could run against the Raiders all game long last year.
