After cooling off, LB Zach Thomas doesn't want to rule out returning to Valley Ranch next season. He said he was emotional last night when he said he probably wouldn't come back to the Cowboys.

"I'm going to weigh my options," said Thomas, who voided the final three years of the contract he signed during the off-season by playing at least 32 percent of the defensive snaps. "The one thing I do know for sure is that I'm going to come back and play in '09. I'm still healthy and feel like I have fuel left in this tank."

Thomas praised Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips, saying they deserved to win. He doesn't know exactly what went wrong during this disastrous season.

"We were inconsistent all year," Thomas said. "That's something they've got to fix."

The odds are Thomas will land with a winning team that doesn't have so much drama.

Pat Watkins had surgery

Safety Pat Watkins missed eight games because of stinger and shoulder problems. Rest will take care of the stinger but Watkins had reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder last week.

He said the recovery time is two and a half to three months.

"In the back of my mind I knew I needed surgery," Watkins said. "I was hoping rest would be enough but I'll be back. I'm expecting a 100 percent recovery."

I respect Thomas for trying to be classy about all this a day later, but it's clear he wants out and it's probably just as clear our vision for him in this defense didn't work out as well as we would have liked. Both parties would probably be better off parting ways.

I want Thomas gone for his level of play. Who cares if he wants to be here, he's awful.

Why do players wait so long to get surgery? Watkins went on IR last month. He could already be a month in to his rehab.

I wish Watkins the best but he has been dealing with these types of injuries since he got to Dallas and I'm afraid he will continue to be plagued by this type of injury given his build

I agree.

We need two new Safties next season.

Maybe 1 through FA and 1 through the Draft.

Zach wanting to bail on us is one of the saddest indicators of how big a mess we are right now.

He played fine, and earlier in the year he said he was happy here. But he's a pure, old school football player. Like the blog states, he's probably just sick of the constant drama surrounding this team.

Maybe he heads to Houston... I could see them adding him. Thomas wasn't and isn't awful.

Good for Watkins I guess.

I agree we need to address safety and would not have an issue with Watkins working as a backup.

Did you ever see Thomas make a play on a run to the outside or a play when he wasn't uninhibited?

Zach isnt bailing....

He even mentioned he doesnt fit in the 3-4 ....tried because he is a home town boy.

btw....Zach leaving isnt a bad thing....he play wasnt that much better then what we had last year.

Now if Ellis would do the same.....stop complaining and leave if you dont like the scheme.

btw...Romo bailed....or should I say mailed the season away with his poor decisions and play :)

I respect him for the classy move of trying to not sound so bitter and such and all but I just feel like he knows that he's going to go somewhere else.

Zach's agent got ahold of him and told him not to burn any bridges. Simple as that.

Happy? crap he said it was a lifelong dream to play for the Cowboys

he's a no non-sense guy and sees that the coaching staff and the majority of the players dont give a crap about winning, so he wants to bail. I cant blame him one bit.

I agree. The guy even agreed to play out of position, at WILL instead of MIKE. The comment about being a ONE down LB was telling.

And everyone here was complaining that he was not playing in the nickel in place of Bradie James earlier in the season.

I don't care how old Zach is, or how well Bradie has played of late, Zach is MUCH better in coverage than Bradie, which is the bulk of a LBs responsibilities.
