Dallas Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones gets the attention of TV cameras as he leaves the field after a 17-7 loss to the San Diego Chargers in an NFL preseason football game at Qualcomm Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, in San Diego, Calif. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)
Special contributor Bob Sturm answered questions in a chat Friday. Here are some highlights.
Question: This has been a tough camp to really get a read on from afar, especially with all the injuries. What is your overall takeway from camp so far, especially your experiences in being at practices and around the team for a few weeks?
Bob Sturm: Well, first and foremost, this is a confident group. They know they are one of the teams to beat, but are still hungry to prove their quality. I think it is great that there are teams in the NFC who they are shooting for, namely the Seattle Seahawks who have run the NFC for a while now. The Cowboys are good, but they still realize they need to go up another level to get where they wish to go. They also are a deep group and are eager to challenge each other for spots. I love the fact that the 53 man looks stronger than usual and that there are so many fine players that cut downs are actually difficult. I feel that a few cuts will be picked up elsewhere and that isn’t normally a Cowboys issue. They actually have too many good players. There are some positions of concern, but this camp has been solid. If they can make it a bit longer without any catastrophic injuries, then the August mission will have been accomplished.
Question: What will you be looking for from Darren McFadden on Sunday, assuming he plays?
Bob Sturm: Just signs of life. I think he could not ask for a better situation right now to revive his career. He is on a team with an amazing cast and a line that appears to be fantastic. He has a pass threat offense where he will not face a loaded box. He has a group of RBs around him who look to be without a serious #1 and Joseph Randle cannot remain on the field at camp with nagging injuries. So if he can put in some work in these next few games that shows he is capable, there is no reason why he cannot take the job or at least a big part of it. I am not optimistic that he is the answer, but from his perspective, there is every reason to have a smile on your face.
