Charles Haley helps DeMarcus Ware

DeMarcus Ware had his first two sacks of the season last Sunday at Kansas City. Any coincidence that they came after a quick tutorial from Charles Haley?

I'll have a story up later about Ware's work with Haley the last two weeks at Valley Ranch. The biggest thing Haley told him was to change up his rushes. Mostly known for his speed, Ware went inside using power for his sacks against the Chiefs.

"You've got some person you can talk to who is one of the best to play the position," Ware said. "Being able to get a one-on-one pass rushing class is good."

Haley even managed to throw some moves on Ware.

"He still has something," Ware said. "He chopped my arm once and I was like, 'Man, you still got it, don't you? Don't take it out on me.'"

Hope he worked with Spencer and Butler, too...

Wade/Herring wont put Butler in enough for it to matter anyway.

Cue the "Haley was not a good person, I'm not sure that I like this!" or "I loved when Randy White punched Charles Haley! Haley was a bad person!" crowd

:eek::

I'm still hopeful about later in the season on that... With him being a rookie and all.

For that matter, I hope we see some Curtis Johnson, too. Wish a reporter would find out about how serious that hammy is.

If I was the coach of any team with a long list of legacy-players like the Cowboys, I would try and take advantage of that. Right now position coaches are there to be the "teachers" but why not have those coaches bring in lagacy-players every now and then to host short, hands-on tutorials?

I mean, just watching 4th and Long you can see the impact a Michael Irvin can have on a players' attitude and skill. So why not have an Irvin come in to work some with the WRs? Why not have Haley do it for the DE/OLBs? Why not have a guy like Woodson or Kevin Smith work witrh the DBs?

That would not only accomplish the task of bring in some real hands-on skil work, it would also allow current players to gain learning and perspective beyon just what position coaches can provide, and finally, it allows for a direct connection to be mae between past and current players. The last one is especially impportant, because instead of talking about Cowboys tradition with current players, this will help them link to it, so that they can better continue it.

I dont have any expectations of Johnson for the rest of this yr, in fact I kinda doubt he'll even be active, barring injuries.

Butler though is different and I really hope we can see him at least a handful of snaps each week.

It really is too bad B Williams tore the ACL though, seemed like Wade really liked him and thought he could really play a role this yr.

Don't remind me. :(

I'm glad to hear that. It's better than saying that guy needs work. Or other negative stuff that some older players have done.

Yeah but one hell of a player and the only one I know of that has 6 Super Bowl rings. You did not mess with Haley from Thrusday on the media avoided him because the man could be down right crud. Come game time though Haley would give offensive linemen more than they could handle

When your visiting Rosy Palms Hotel, right in the front of the film room, in front of all your teammates and coaches, you know something is wrong.

What's funny is that I remember a story in the offseason quoting Wade as saying he's telling Ware to cut down on the number of moves he works on.

Edit: Here's the story: http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***/archives/2009/08/wade-phillips-doesnt-want-demarcus-ware.html

Wade Phillips doesn't want DeMarcus Ware to be creative

In his constant quest to improve, DeMarcus Ware often tries to add to his pass-rush tool box.
"Every day, I try something different," the NFL's reigning sacks leader said. "If it works, that's something I will probably key on in practice and do over and over again."

Wade Phillips wishes Ware wouldn't worry so much about adding to his arsenal of moves. With his explosiveness, Ware is like a pitcher with 100-mph heat. He doesn't need many other pitches to be dominant. Why mess with a lot of junk when you can blow hitters away with your best stuff?

"I tell him not to make up stuff," Phillips said during his press conference yesterday. "You can do too much. I coached Reggie White and Bruce Smith. They didn't have many moves. They had a great move that nobody could stop, or if they could stop it, they had a counter off it. That's basically what they had.

"I told DeMarcus and worked with him a lot on that. If he does too much, he hurts himself."
We got Phillips, perhaps the NFL's premier pass-rush guru, to elaborate while he sat in his golf cart after the press conference. Phillips' passion for pass rushing was evident by the way his eyes lit up while discussing what made Ware so special.

Phillips said he's never seen a pass rusher with Ware's ability to stop and start, which he compared to Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris. That's why Ware's best move is the stutter.

"If he can get offensive linemen to stop, he can outrun them," Phillips said. "He can run around them before they get started again. He has that kind of explosion that not many people have."
Of course, Ware often doesn't need to make a move to turn the corner. If left alone on a left tackle, he can burst by most of them with a pure speed rush. That sets up a sick inside-out move that's like an NBA point guard's crossover dribble.

Ware didn't become the seventh player to record a 20-sack season since the NFL officially started counting the stat because he relied purely on his freakish athleticism. There's a lot of technique involved, too, particularly with hand placement.

But Phillips wants his best player to keep pass rushing as simple as possible.

Apparently, all the reporters who have access to the players are too busy defending their opinion about them, instead of asking actual questions that we'd like to know the answer to.
