Former Texas receiver Limas Sweed, who met with the Cowboys on Friday, said he could have had surgery on his sprained left wrist immediately after the injury occurred in August. But he said he decided to play the first six games of the season in 2007 to help the Longhorns.
"I definitely had a sprain," Sweed said. "I could have had the surgery. But if I did that, I felt like I would have been turning my back on my teammates. They made me a cast and I went as long as I could, and then I had the surgery. I wanted to help my team."
As a result of waiting to have the surgery, Sweed has had to work overtime to prove to NFL teams his wrist is fully recovered. He is projected as the fourth-best receiver in this year's draft by Rick Gosselin.
Sweed said Jerry Jones seemed "genuine" and wanted to know what Sweed could bring to an NFL team. Sweed said he told Jones he would be a receiver who worked hard every day, stayed out of trouble and would be a big-play guy.
"I don't know what Dallas will do," Sweed said. "We'll see."
Sweed said he wasn't a fan of teams growing up in Washington, Texas, right outside of Brenham. He said he was more a fan of individual receivers.
"I always loved watching Randy Moss growing up," Sweed said. "But I also looked at the smaller receivers and what they did - guys like Marvin Harrison."
Asked how he'd feel about playing with Terrell Owens, Sweed said, "I'd love it. I'm a student of the game. I'd love to learn from T.O."
