A case for Porter
Got this scathing e-mail from a pal of mine:
Just 'cause some Pittsburgh writer and some ESPN writer/scout (who wasn't good enough to be a full-time scout for an NFL team, by the way), say that Porter is no longer good doesn't make it fact, Bro.
Duh, most players pick up their sacks against bad tackles. And most of the time, if you've noticed, Walter Jones shuts down pass rushers. Duh. Most good offensive tackles do that, Bro.
Maybe Porter is a system guy; all the ex-Steeler linebackers (Kirkland, Brown, Bell come to mind) except Vrabel (who's basically a down lineman and not a linebacker) don't do so well when they leave. But just become some shmuck with a laptop says he's through, as the great George Gershwin once wrote, "It ain't necessarily so."
Seven sacks, 40 tackles, two picks, three passes defended in 14 games are good numbers, especially for what people call a "down" year. After Ware, those numbers would probably make him the second-best defender on the lowly Cowboys' defense. To be sure, your lowly Cowboys, with their sloth-footed safeties, cover-nobody corners and transparent tackles could most definitely use a dose of Porter's energy.
In closing, you're a fool.
