The World According to Keyshawn
Keyshawn Johnson, the former Cowboys receiver, was in town today getting inducted into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. It's always interesting to hear Keyshawn talk about anything.
We used to call it getting sucked into the vortex. Once you got in, you couldn't get out. It happened again Tuesday as the rain fell. The guy is extremely entertaining, intelligent and savvy. He knows what to say, how to say it, when to say it and who to say it too. He still has his house here, too.
Here's a couple of takes from the talk:
On getting inducted: "This is the first opportunity to be recognized for some kind of Hall and the fact you're recognized by a major bowl game you were successful in means something. It was my first bowl game (beating Texas Tech). My mom (Vivian Jessie) was born and raised here. To have that chance to play here was something I was excited about."
About his involvement in ESPN's coverage of the upcoming draft: "I'm going to do all of the positions for the most part. Just the normal deal. Evaluate the talent, what a team needs, what I believe a team needs, what I would do if I was the GM, all those sorts of things."
On being a GM one day: "I've always say I'm not going to be somebody's do boy and run around for 25 years and be a scout and finally great a break. I want it to be like the NBA where as soon as I retire, you need me in a powerful position otherwise I'm not going to be able to do it because I don't have to. I would love to do it in a heartbeat. I could do it and be successful doing it and be productive doing it ... I've put my time in playing. If you can't believe in a player evaluating talent who's been around, 13, 14, 15 years then I'm the wrong guy. They've been doing it in the NBA, why can't they do it in the NFL."
On Southern Cal receiver Dwayne Jarrett: "I think Dwayne Jarrett gets a bad rap because he's coming from SC and the last guy who came out of there was Mike Williams and things didn't work out for Mike Williams. Now Dwayne Jarrett is a lot like me in the sense that he has a long-range reception area from top to bottom, left to right. He can go get balls you don't expect guys to get ... He won't get past Carolina (at No. 14) if I have anything to do with it."
On Bill Parcells missing football: He won't miss coaching. The reason why he doesn't want to coach is there's too much (expletive) in the game. I think if something came up that made sense GM-wise, that he would do it."
