Touching tribute to Rivera


I caught myself getting misty-eyed while reading this post about Marco Rivera on ESPN.com's fledgling Hashmarks blog. Rivera is handling his release with class.


For those of you who wonder why I refuse to name my famous former colleague manning the Hashmarks blog: I heard lil' m bad-mouthing my work on his weekly radio show once without mentioning my name or the url of this here blog. I refuse to mention his name until he gives me some World Wide Leader love.


Our bitter rivalry could escalate when he makes a Valley Ranch appearance this week. Calvin "Lucky" Watkins has assured me that he has my back.

I know that Rivera didn't work out for the Cowboys, but IMO he has handled himself with class the entire time.

I wish that they could have kept him around as a locker room presence.

I wish that Greg Ellis would have spent a little more time with him, maybe he would handle this situation better.

I don't think Henry's that bad, when he's healthy, he can play.

Why bash Marco that way, sure he couldn't play because of injuries, but he gave all he could. But how many players in this childish, selfish generation of pro athletes would offer to give back part of his bonus and would still root for the team that just relesed him and handle it with such class. Rivera is a breath of fresh air in this generation, it sucks that a guy like this gets a ending to his career like that!

Locker room presence? That would be a bit expensive. We've got plenty of dead weight on this team, even with Rivera gone.

Why not just get a cutout of Rivera and put it in the locker room?
