Dallas Cowboys running back Gus Johnson leaves the field during the third quarter of an NFL preseason football game at Qualcomm Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, in San Diego, Calif. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)

James Hanna suffered a sprained knee in Thursday’s loss to San Diego that could keep the tight end out of practice for the next week or two.

That appears to be the most serious injury to come of the Cowboys pre-season opener. Other injuries of note were to rookie running back Gus Johnson (shoulder sprain) and safety Ray Vinopal (ankle).

Hanna’s absence will give rookie Geoff Swaim the chance to make a move before training camp ends in two weeks.

After the game, head coach Jason Garrett said that running backs Darren McFadden (hamstring) and Lance Dunbar (ankle) were on schedule to return to practice Saturday. Garrett said he doesn’t know if receiver Dez Bryant, who has been slowed by a strained left hamstring, will make it back by Saturday.

i dont know for sure, but i like our current crop of TE's i just dont think we are using them correctly. I still dont see the need for Witten to start when he could serve better later in the game or for crucial plays. I dont think we use Escobar correctly, and why Hanna (either blocking or receiving) doesnt play the biggest bulk, just eludes me.

Good news for McFadden and Dunbar. We will have all 3 top guys back.
Still need to bring in a few more, now that Johnson has a shoulder injury. Hope all this injury bug stuff is resolved soon.
Hopefully Hanna will actually only miss 2 weeks. Makes a case now to keep 4 TE's more so than before.

A closer at TE? Are you kidding me?

OK you only want to use Witten as a specialty player and you want to replace him with Hanna? Can't be serious

We do need to use Escobar more because he's a mismatch for the opposing team.

I like Hanna better than Escobar in this offense. I think Escobar is a better receiver just because of mismatches, but Hanna is a much better blocker and while he doesn't have the size, he can get downfield in a hurry.

you really dont leave a lot of room, i was speaking who was on the roster. are we going to see a lot of HOF TEs on the roster , probably not right after Witten. So we have to work with that we have. Does Witten need to start? No, there will be no parade, no medal or a gold star, but im not sold on wasting his legs on plays he will get hurt on.

Pretty sure you are going to be in the minority with that opinion.

not in real life. Sorry but theres no need to find his replacement as they are sitting on the bench, some guys got to play. I can understand romos replacement, i dont see the need that Witten has to be in every play or start at this point in his career.
