Dallas Cowboys coaches met with veteran quarterback Austin Davis on Wednesday morning and he remained at The Star in Frisco during the club's annual kickoff luncheon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The two sides talked about a deal but have yet to come to an agreement. Davis was released Monday by Cleveland. He went 3-7 in 10 starts over the last two seasons for the Browns and Rams.

The Cowboys wanted to sign Davis so he could be available for Thursday's preseason game, even though he'd be unlikely to play. Davis wants assurances that he'll be around longer than a few days.

The Cowboys want Davis to stick around longer. They view him as a possible option to serve as Prescott's backup while Romo is out, a source said, rather than just an extra body to get through the final preseason game.

don't see them having season long plans for him. He'll hang around till Romo's return and offed. Unless Showers scares them as a backup, he's matriculated in the system and them looking at Davis is for emergency purposes. JMTC......

I don't blame Davis, I wouldn't want to sign only to get cut in a few weeks if Romo comes back.

you think they will cut him I don't he much better than Showers on ANY GIVEN DAY

unlessx we are going to run a Cleveland offense ala RG111

Davis would be better served to find a more permanent spot. Aren't there any guys sitting on a couch right now that can fill the void for a few weeks?

The FO might be playing a waiting game to see more of what they have in Showers in his preseason game Thursday night. Either that, or they are hoping someone better might be cut on Saturday, although it remains to be seen who it would be. It's a delicate tightrope the FO is walking to try to get the best possible outcome, that's for sure.

There's probably a good chance that Showers will end up on the practice squad, which would leave room for a third QB, even with the return of duty of Romo. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Davis got a better offer, to be totally candid.

I'd take Davis over Showers. Showers hasn't shown me anything in the last couple of years.

weeks???? he's getting cut right after the game!!

It's a good bet that that possibility will be hashed and re-hashed during negotiations. It would be extremely shoddy maneuvering on the part of Davis' agent if that were allowed to happen. I doubt that it will.

I'm pretty sure the players only get some kind of per-diam for preseason games. It's hard to picture Austin Davis risking injury for that.

It sounds like they want assurances put into the deal to eliminate that, or at least minimize it.
