Cowlishaw: Cowboys have almost nothing to show from '08, '09 and '12 drafts

Published: 27 January 2014 11:21 PM

Columnist Tim Cowlishaw answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Do you ever consider that it's much easier to do the draft as words in the air vs. having to actually draft a player? Jerry has done if not the best job at least a very competent job on the drafts for a very much longer time than you or any writer has given him credit for. And you sure don't hear any crap about his first pick last year anymore do you?

Tim Cowlishaw: I don't know how you could look at recent drafts and say that. From 2008, Scandrick is the only player here. From 2009, no one is here. 2012 appears to have been a terrible draft -- trading up to get Claiborne. In what world, are these good drafts? They should provide the core of this team right now and there is almost nothing there.

From the 2008 draft, 4 of the 6 draft picks are on active rosters and the 5th one was on an active roster for part of last season.

The 2009 draft was absolutely horrible.12 picks and a horrible draft is an indictment of the Cowboys personnel/draft department.

From the 2012 draft, which it is still too early to tell, 4 of the 7 picks are currently on the roster so hard to label it horrible at this point. By late 2015, we'll know how good or bad it was.

From the 2013 draft, all 7 picks remained on the roster/practice squad for the 2013 season. Of course part of that was the salary cap situation and the massive number of injuries we had especially on defense.

There's no denying our drafts haven't been good in a long time, but they are not as dismal as the media makes them out to be. There were several players taken that I was not happy with. Some of those have played better than I thought and some have played worse than I even imagined.

Given our salary cap situation this season, I think it's imperative that we have one of our best drafts in many years this year. We also need to hope that our 2013 draft picks improve and contribute more this season.

The first number indicates the order in which they were chosen and not the round. My lack of skills with formatting allows me to put all of the information here.

So Josh Brent was not taken in the first, but the first - ands only - player Dallas took in the Supplemental Draft in 2010.

Way to early to talk about the 2012 draft. I would like to see an overall comparision of the 2008/2009 drafts with the rest of the NFL. I think we all know that the 2009 draft was a bad draft overall. Not saying JJ didn't mess it up, but I would think the average would be like 1 or 2 players are still on the team that drafted them.

2008 had a few decent players. They are just playing for other teams.

Various:
Cowlishaw is a steaming pile of idiot.
This is a classic example of why.

2008 provides this roster with only a starting CB which may seem poor until you realize that draft was 6 players.
EVERY PLAYER STARTED GAMES IN THIS LEAGUE.
They all lasted at least 5 years in the NFL.

Do you know how friggin hard it is to make that type of draft haul?

BUT, BUT, BUT none of the players are here.

Yea, because we have no cap space. We can't afford the depth guys who make the roster better once they are off rookie contracts.

Anyone really wanna argue that MartyB wouldn't be our 2nd best TE?
That Mike Jenkins wouldn't be a top 4 CB??

Even Tashard Choice would have been our 2nd best RB last year.

2010
Almost nothing left. Except your best overall athletes on each side of the ball you mean???
Dez, Lee, Brent and Lissemore all started games here. We traded Lissemore for a higher pick when we changed schemes.
If that's bad draft class lord let us do that every year.
2 guys with All Pro talent and 2 legit NFL DL?

2012
Really??? Mo has been a starter for over 20 games already and has played every game he's been active.
Crawford hot hurt last year but has been a rotational guy form the day he was drafted.
Wilber is a legit NFL talent that they need ot find a position for due to scheme change.
But largely that class is unwritten.

He's the same doofus that said Adrian Peterson played against Dallas this year.

Both of those teams have changed GMs since those drafts. Oops.

not sure that matters.
cowlishaw's point was those drafts should form the nucleus of your team.
...except apparently if you want to go to the super bowl.

feel free to examine the 49ers and Pats as well. very few bodies form those drafts still around.

cowlishaw made a point that has no basis in fact.
it was an idiom he pulled out of his backside that hateful little mongrels lapped up.

Looked at Seattle and Denver for 2008/2009 drafts.

Seattle - 2008 has 1 player on team, 2009 has 1 player on team
Denver - 2008 has 1 player on team, 2009 has 3 players on team
This will get swept under the rug by those who will never get it. The average NFL life is 3.5 years. In the era of Free Agency players move on to multiple teams. Further the same people who will grip about 2008 would be griping if we kept Felix, Martellus, and Jenkins. They are never happy with anything and never will be.

I think you get a pass when you get to the Super Bowl. Just saying.
