OXNARD, Calif. — With the first off day of training camp here for the Dallas Cowboys, this gives me time to scratch my head.
We kept Curious George rolling through the offseason and the draft, and now we’ll get back to it Monday after the first four practices of training camp.
Sunday brought us drama: the first fight of training camp. Reserve cornerback Tyler Patmon held his own against receiver Dez Bryant, who just wouldn’t let it go as the two went to the sideline.
With the fight over now, lets’ get right to this edition of Curious George and five things I’m scratching my head over these days in sunny California:
* I’m curious how much CB Tyler Patmon gained Sunday with his play on field, standing up to Dez Bryant: Tyler Patmon just isn’t fighting Dez Bryant at training camp this year. He’s fighting for a job. I wonder how impressed the Cowboys coaches were with him Sunday and what that will mean for him in the end. The Cowboys brought in competition for Patmon this offseason in first-round pick Byron Jones and veteran free agent Corey White. Patmon had his moments last season for the Cowboys, helping to replace Morris Claiborne. Patmon knows he has to show coaches in training camp this year he should stick around. Before the fight Sunday, Patmon had played well in 1-on-1 and team drills. Patmon filled in for Morris Claiborne in team drills as the Cowboys play it safe with Claiborne early in camp. Patmon had back-to-back pass breakups in 1-on-1 drills earlier Sunday – once against WR Terrrance Williams – and was solid in his coverage in team drills. Patmon never backed down when matched up on the outside against Bryant. He never backed down from Bryant in the fight either, actually throwing the first punch after Bryant ripped off his helmet. Standing up to a team leader like Bryant and the way Patmon stood out in individual drills had to help him in his case to make the final roster.
