The NFL’s salary cap makes it difficult for teams to keep all of their key players from year to year. The Cowboys obviously experienced this in March with the loss of their record-setting leading rusher, DeMarco Murray.
On the defensive side of the ball, there were losses (Bruce Carter, Justin Durant, Henry Melton, Sterling Moore, George Selvie, Anthony Spencer) but also some significant additions (Jasper Brinkley, Andrew Gachkar, Randy Gregory, Greg Hardy, Byron Jones, Danny McCray, Corey White, Damien Wilson).
To give you an idea of what Dallas’ first-team defense could look like this season, here’s a way-too-early projection.
DE: Jeremy Mincey. The right defensive end spot will change throughout the season considering the talent that was added over the last few months. Second-round pick Randy Gregory and 2013 Pro Bowler Greg Hardy will certainly get their chances. But Gregory will need some time to add weight and get acclimated to the NFL and Hardy is unlikely to be eligible early in the season because of suspension. Mincey, who will also likely play some DT, led the team in sacks last season as he started every game.
DT: Tyrone Crawford. The three-technique defensive tackle is one of the most important positions in Rod Marinelli’s defensive scheme. Crawford started playing there last season and ran with the opportunity. The former third-round pick started 15 games last season, totaling 33 tackles, three sacks and 29 quarterback pressures.
DT: Nick Hayden. The 29-year-old has started every game he’s played for the Cowboys over the last two seasons. Lining up at the one-technique tackle position, Hayden doesn’t put up the big stats, but he’s very good at executing Marinelli’s game plan. Mincey calls the veteran tackle “very valuable” and “underrated.”
DE: DeMarcus Lawrence. With the additions of Hardy and Gregory, Lawrence is focusing on left defensive end. Last year’s second-round pick had two sacks, three tackles and a forced fumble in the Cowboys’ two playoff games after missing the first half of the season with a broken foot. “He really made an impact on our team towards the end of the year when he came back,” Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. “We think the sky is the limit for him.”
