IRVING — Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is eligible to play in his first game this season Sunday against the Giants, but there is no guarantee he’ll be back on the field after his two-year hiatus.

“He’s certainly part of the defensive line rotation that we are evaluating and we will just see how he practices,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He has made a lot of strides each day he has practiced.”

Garrett said last week that Brent still needed to lose some weight as he worked his way back into playing shape.

“It’s getting better and better, meaning lighter and lighter,” Garrett said Wednesday.

But Garrett also said Brent’s size could help the Cowboys’ interior defensive line.

“Josh is very athletic with his feet and his hands. He can get off blocks,” Garrett said. “Those are the traits you are looking for. He is a competitive guy. He is a tough guy. He is in the stage of trying to get his body right and his feet underneath him.”

Let him earn his spot on the field by performing on practice....the coaches aren't going to put him in if he isn't ready (IMO)

Give him some snaps. Keep it at 10-15 for both games. That gives him 20-30 snaps before Chicago.

I'm not. Any snaps he can get this week will get him more ready for Thanksgiving. C'mon already, it's time to go to work.

Oddly enough, I agree with your thought process.

The playoffs are just around the corner so if he can have an impact -- even if it is just a handful of plays -- he needs to be in there. No point holding anything back. The time for personnel half measures and talk of Brent's remorse/new-found dedication are over; get him out there if he can help.

What Garrett isn't saying is that Brent actually strained his groin in practice and his ability to play Sunday is in question.

The Cowboys should hire someone to stretch out groin muscles before practice/games. Maybe Jerry can offer the job to the stripper that wanted to sue him?

It's difficult to put him on the 46 if he's only going to play 10 snaps on defense and zero on ST. They probably want to have the 4 guys that is the standard rotation when healthy (T.Crawford, Melton, Hayden, T. McClain). They either have to bump one of those guys or bump a ST player and go with 5 DTs.
