Former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson joined "The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley" on KESN-FM 103.3 on Thursday. Here are some highlights from the interview.

On Rolando McClain:

“The story about McClain – and I remember when he came out as a rookie — they talked about how intelligent he was and his football IQ. I think that plays a much larger factor than his athleticism. The fact of knowing where to be. He plays fast simply because he knows what coming his direction, and he’s extremely instinctive. He’s reading plays before the ball is even snapped. Not only that, but moving guys around, knowing where the play is going to be. The guy misses a couple practices last week and jumps right back into this game this past weekend and plays extremely well.”

On whether the Cowboys get more sacks:

“I’ve always been a guy that felt like sacks are overrated. Sacks are great when it’s a key moment and you really need it. … I’ve always been a guy that (focused on) third down efficiency and points against. If you can hold a teams to under 17 points, 20 points — 17 points a game is how we used to do it — but getting out on third down is huge. If your third-down efficiency is there and you’re at high clip, I think that’s more important than the sack totals. Pressures are huge also. Getting pressure on the quarterback and getting off the field on third down, that’s where I would lean.”

How many years did Ware have high sack totals and what did that do for our defense? Not much....

It's crazy the type of presence he brings to the middle of our D.

Sean Lee is better at dropping into coverage but overall I think I would take McClain over Lee and that's not a knock on Lee.

i agree. just his physical presence in the middle is huge and he is good at blitzing up the middle too. it's would be very cool to see him and lee side by side next year and with him in the middle may help lee do more of what he does best and thats cover recievers

I would take both. McClain in the middle and Lee on the weakside would make a pretty lethal combination....if they could only stay on the field together.

Yeah we could have a special Linebacking core next year.

Durant may be a bench player. That's crazy to think.

By the way, what is the best source for pressure/hurries/hits stats?

That sounds like a nod to Charles Haley who always seemed to get a sack when they needed it the most.

I think both steady pressure and sacks matter. The thing about getting the sack is the loss of yardage but I think it is a momentum builder as player feed off of it. Getting close but no cigar can get frustrating for players. DL players are trying to get to the QB not just hurry them. I don't think sacks are some be all stat to me many stats do not tell the whole story.

watt had a pressure on that play. And did it matter? NO. THAT is why a sack is much more important.

True but Romo escaped the pressure and got outside so pretty much you could say Watt had pressure and lost the pressure on Romo. There are many times ints happen because of the pressure in the face of the QB and he is having to make the throw without fully seeing and getting set. With a sack there is no int it is a loss of yardage. I think both matter.

I use PFF, which requires a subscription. Here are the stats for the Cowboys.

Throw Harvey Martin into the same category. He was very reliable when it come to a needed 3rd down stop. Of course he had Randy White, and Ed Too Tall Jones in the lineup with him, so that helped his production
