Dallas Cowboys' Jones will no longer return kicks

08:21 PM CST on Friday, November 13, 2009
By GERRY FRALEY and TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Running back Felix Jones acknowledged that he probably will not be used as a kickoff returner in Sunday's game at Green Bay.

Coach Wade Phillips has said that as Jones' plays on offense increase, his special-teams duties would decrease. The Cowboys have worked out rookie Kevin Ogletree and running back Tashard Choice on kickoffs this week.

"If that's what the head man says," Jones said.

In the last three games, Jones has averaged only 21.4 yards on seven kickoff returns.

Jones will continue to wear a brace on the left knee that was injured earlier this season. He practices without the brace to strengthen the knee but uses the brace in games for protection. He hopes to eliminate the brace at some point.

Jones said he is aware of the brace but doesn't believe it detracts from his performance. In 20 carries while wearing the brace, he has averaged 4.3 yards. In 21 carries before the injury, Jones averaged 10.1 yards.

Witten keeps it short: Tony Romo has targeted Jason Witten 13 times on third down, and 13 times the Cowboys have come up with a first down.

While he is still making the clutch play, Witten hasn't been able to make the downfield play with his 8.9-yard per catch average. He leads the Cowboys with 44 catches, but his longest reception is 22 yards.

"I feel like we're not getting those plays down the field as much for whatever reason," Witten said. "I don't think there's one thing that you can look at and say that's what's triggering it, but a lot of it is underneath [passes].

"But we've had a lot of different guys step up and make big plays. [Getting more yards] might be different in the second half of the season."

Witten's first of eight career 100-yard receiving games came at Lambeau Field, where he caught eight passes for 112 yards and a touchdown in 2004.

Austin stays focused: Miles Austin won't be able to count on the element of surprise Sunday. He had a breakout game against the Packers last season with two catches for 115 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter to seal the 27-16 win.

Not that Austin is thinking of what happened last year at Lambeau Field.

"Yeah, I had a big game personally, but I'm not thinking about the last game we played," Austin said. "Even if they killed us, I wouldn't think about that, either. I'm just getting ready for this week and this week only."

Briefly: Center Andre Gurode and safety Ken Hamlin took part in their first full practice of the week and said they would play Sunday. They are listed as probable on the official injury report. ... Linebacker DeMarcus Ware (foot), safety Gerald Sensabaugh (thumb) and running back Marion Barber (thumb) are also probable. Returner Allen Rossum (hamstring) will miss his third straight game.

Yeah kinda thought this would happen, although I bet at key moments in big games they will put him back there.

Looked a little tentative on KO returns the past couple weeks anyway, probably from the knee injury and brace.

Good: he was going to get seriously injured if he kept trying to return kicks: too much tippy toeing and lateral movement, not enough north/south explosiveness: he isn't 100% yet IMO.

If this stat is accurate, that's truly remarkable.

Don't forget the leaving his feet move where he jumps up before getting hit. That could get him killed at some point. Maybe he needs to just think about for a while before trying again.

If 13 for 13 on third down attempts is accurate for Romo and Witten, remarkable doesn't begin to describe it.

Good get Ogletree some more time somewhere. He seems to be earning the extra chances.

Edit: Why is Rossum still on the team?

It is, and Witten is still good at finding a spot to hook up for it. The only thing that kills me about Witten, is his RAC or YAC is almost nonexistent this year. He seems to go down on first contact every time. He never seems to push through for any extra yards. Everytime I see him get stood up and tackled, it brings me back to the Seattle playoff game..........I hate that thought.

It is not accurate, I can remember 2 plays in the eagle game where Jason was stopped short of the first on third down.

yeah, I can only remember one, where we were all commenting on it. But maybe there was a penalty afterwards that made it a first down. I dunno, can't remember.

Defenses are not letting Witten get behind them. He is usually catching the ball while running lateral routes from what I've seen and then dragging a man for the extra yards needed, that or finding a zone in the middle of the field. He is still money tho.

Yes, he is still money and that's all that matters. The defense must account for him, which opens up things for others. As far as I'm concerned, Witten gives us exactly what we need from him.

McFadden, Stewart, D Williams, LJ, Portis, Jacobs, L.T., almost all the RBs in the NFL could be classified as teases sometimes, even the great Brian Westbrook can't seem to stay healthy.

Most starting NFL RBs are more athletic than T. Choice.

RBs who are both physically gifted and durable like Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew or Chris Johnson are certainly the exception, not the rule.

Completely made up and false. From the Philly game play-by-play:
  1. 3-6-DAL 45 (5:35) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 82-J.Witten to 50 for 5 yards (22-A.Samuel).
  2. 4-1- (5:10) 1-M.McBriar punts 35 yards to PHI 15, Center-91-L.Ladouceur, fair catch by 10-D.Jackson.
  1. 3-10-DAL 28 :)54) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short left to 82-J.Witten to DAL 33 for 5 yards (50-W.Witherspoon).
  2. 4-5-DAL 33 :)19) 1-M.McBriar punts 49 yards to PHI 18, Center-91-L.Ladouceur, out of bounds.
  1. 3-7-DAL 49 (3:06) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 82-J.Witten to PHI 44 for 7 yards (21-J.Hanson). PENALTY on DAL-82-J.Witten, Offensive Pass Interference, 10 yards, enforced at DAL 49 - No Play.
That's 3 times in just the last game where it didn't happen (yeah, the last one doesn't really count because the play didn't count, but still).
