How many times have we heard the HC say...we need to run the ball more? MULTIPLE times. We have heard it after different games where they clearly abandoned the run and the fans/media got after them about it. They have said it prior to a season starting. They have had Red as OC, Callahan as OC....both were pass happy...now we got a new OC who is known for having an offense that is pass happy as well.

Do we honestly think we are going to turn back into a run based offense instead of a pass based offense?

Do we honestly think we will finish the season with the highest rushing attempts since emmitt was here?

This team is about the pass. If anything I imagine the new OC might use the RBs more than the last two OCs have...but in the passing game.

It is so logical and right in front of the fans face to see that we are a passing team and just hired yet another OC that is a passing guy but all of a sudden we get another Olinemen and they think we are going to magically change to a team that runs the ball more than we have ever ran it since emmitt was here because we are turning back into a run base offense?

We will have shocked faces and posts at the end of the year that wonder why we did not run it more?

Wonder what the over/under is for times in a game where we abandon the run and lose a game after leading?

That's just a ridiculous argument. The league is a passing league so of course they aren't going to become a run based team - nor should they. But they definitely need to run more and they need to use more play action off of it. And Linehan despite being a passing OC did run the ball more than Garrett and Callahan. And yes he does throw to the backs a lot. 50+ to two different RBs last year.

Myself I don't expect us to be a grind it out team, fully expect to see Dallas amongst the top passing teams in the league. I don't expect us to be a 50/50 pass/run team but I do think Linehan will run the ball more than what we have been doing and why not he ran more than Dallas did last season when in Det.

Rangers beat writer Gerry Fraley and columnist Rick Gosselin joined Fox Sports Southwest's Dana Larson on Monday for SportsDay OnAir. Here are some highlights.

On what to take away from OTAs:

Gosselin: "They only lost one player in Sean Lee. Nobody else got hurt in these non-padded practices. I think they got time to figure out what Scott Linehan is incorporating in the offense. That always helps to get a running start in training camp. Let's hope there is a few more hand-offs in that offense. There are a lot of new pieces to incorporate. The defensive front seven is going into a new scheme. I think a lot of the basic, early teaching is in place for the offense and defense, so they can just go to camp ready."

On Scott Linehan:

Fraley: "I saw Scott in St. Louis when he got fired midway through the season. He had Stephen Jackson who is one of the most gifted running backs in football and a cut ahead of Murray right now. He had no idea what to do with Stephen Jackson in that Rams offense. I still think Linehan is a puzzling hire to me. I understand he is tight with Jason Garrett. He is even more pass happy than Jason Garrett. When you have a line with three first rounders and a quality back in Murray, why do you want a guy who wants to throw the ball even more? I don't get it. Unless he has undergone a real conversion in his thought process, Ill be stunned if they run the ball more. They may run it less."

Gosselin: "They didn't run the ball in Detroit last year. That's one of the few teams who ran it less than the Cowboys. In this building, the owner, the GM, the head coach, the coordinator and the quarterback all want to pass. The only one guy who doesn't want to pass is Demarco Murray and he gets out voted every time."

Gosselin: Cowboys' offensive line is strength of team, should bring swagger

  • Gosselin: Why Cowboys' current defensive staff should stick around even if Garrett doesn't
  • Gosselin: I'm concerned about Cowboys D-line, not confident Lawrence, Melton can 'break even'

If he doesn't take advantage of a good offensive line and run the ball more then he should get fired. In order to win, you have to control the line of scrimmage. You do that with a physical, effective running game.

Guess we all will have to wait and see how it all unfolds...LOL
Game situations will also dicatate the run / pass ratio.
Offense scores, if so, more through passing, defense holds the opponent from scoring, run the ball late in the game, then the ratio evens out, or more run to pass.
Play from behind, after running game may not be that good though running a lot in first half, and the opposing defense may have a say in that, then passing takes over.

It really doesn't matter if 50 / 50, or whatever, it's how effective they are with it when they need to be. Which is really the entire game, but you know what I mean.

I am sure if the 1st game against SF, win or lose, if it's a 60 / 40 passing over running, then people will say, see things didn't change. If it's 60 / 40 running over passing, then it will be, they really are committed to the run. Only in game 2, it will be opposite and people will say the say things.

I agree that the game and the opponet will play a part in how you go about attacking them. If facing a team who is weak vs the run you bet I think that you should attack that weakness. Also as you mention what the situation is in the game is or should factor in

I disagree with this, basically Linehan is here to assist with the passing offense. It would be a little odd to bring in all these improvements to the offensive line and not use them... We grabbed a great center last year who is a great pass blocker but good at opening holes and even pulling to open a lane. We just grabbed another offensive linemen with similar traits.

Just as people have caught on to we are trying to rebuild the great wall of Dallas... Granted the likelyhood of anyone having a line like that again are slim but solidifying they offensive line isn't just about our passing game. I think we might surprise quite a few people with how much we do run the ball this year.... It might not be top 10 attempts in the league but still...

Just my two cents...
