Gosselin: If Cowboys make playoffs, here's who I think is the best matchup for them

Columnist Rick Gosselin held a chat on Monday. Here are some highlights.

What are the odds that the one year the Cowboys are good, 11-5 might not be enough to get in the playoffs. If that happens, would people (media) still consider it a successful season?

By winning last night, the Cowboys took control of the division. Win out, and you don't worry about missing the playoffs. I doubt there'd be much criticism if the Cowboys went 11-5 and missed the playoffs. The celebration already began when they won their ninth game. That yanked them from that downward spiral of mediocrity. That made this a successful season. Everything else becomes gravy...

Who is a better matchup Detroit or Arizona?

Arizona is down to its third quarterback. Detroit's quarterback rallied the Lions from big fourth-quarter deficits in both 2011 and 2013 to beat the Cowboys. Who would you rather face?

Looks like this year will be just like the last 3, last game win or go home, for the Cowboys. Obviously playing much better this year but situation likely the same. But doesn't this just prove/validate that they've actually been in the playoffs each of the last 3 years....if the last game of the season is win or go home, isn't that a de facto playoff game?

I know Jerry Jones would like you to believe they've been in the playoffs each of the last three years. But that's like telling TCU they are a part of the national championship playoff in the Peach Bowl. That kind of talk is a bit far-fetched.

If we do win out the odds are we will play against Detroit and I like our odds against them. If we beat them, then odds are we will go on the road and play the Packers. That is where our season would probably end. Either way, just making the playoffs is a big deal for this team and the fan base.

The most likely opponent at the moment is Green Bay. We lose the tie breaker against the other division winners (Seattle/Arizona and Detroit/Green Bay). And the other wild card winners would own the tie breaker against Green Bay.

Green Bay needs to beat Detroit week 17 and finish a game ahead of Detroit to win that division.

Seattle needs to beat Arizona this week and finish at least tied with Arizona to win the division.

This is what I think the NFC playoff picture will look like.

1. Seattle-Bye
2. Greenbay-Bye
3. Dallas (Will play Detroit) Dallas wins
4. New Orleans (Will play Arizona) New Orleans wins
5. Arizona (Wild Card)
6. Detroit (Wild card)

2nd Round.

Seattle at home vs New Orleans Seattle wins
Greenbay at home vs. Dallas Green Bay wins (Would be something if we hadn't lost on the road all year and then go into GB and get the win though).

NFC Division game

Green Bay at Seattle Seattle wins and goes to the super bowl again.

No it isn't Green Bay unless you think Detroit is going to beat Green Bay in Green Bay on week 17. I don't.

Detroit just has to finish tied with Green Bay. Even if they spilt the head to head, Detroit still owns the tie breaker. So Green Bay needs to win this week too. If they lose this week and Detroit wins, Detroit wins the division.

I think Green Bay wins out. Tampa isn't going to beat Green Bay and I would not bet on Detroit beating Green Bay in Green Bay for the Division Title.

I could care less what this idiot has to say. Like Scandrick said earlier, we just need to keep our heads down and have tunnel vision.

Yeah, GB is playing the 2-12 bucs man. They will have no problem winning that game. So when Detroit and GB play each other in GB they will be tied, so once GB beats them week 17, they will get the #2 seed. Detroit will have a punchers chance but I don't see them beating GB in GB.

You mean you "couldn't" care less? When you say you "could" care less, that means there is more for you to care. When you say couldn't care less, that means you are at the bottom of caring and you couldn't possibly care any less.
