Injuries will play a role in who suits up obviously. Looks like they will carry 4 RBs and ??? no FB this year. TBD.

I agree.

They are not going to go thru the RB revolving door again like last year.

At least this year..we have 4 RBs.

I don't think they'd be trying a LB and a RB at FB if they had no plans to have a FB on the roster.
When you get down on the goal line and in short yardage, the FB becomes critical unless you have an excellent HB who can operate as a FB. One blitzer or missed block dooms a play in short yardage without a FB.

I agree which is why I questioned the FB. However, I'm wondering if Morris can be the FB although I suspect you're right and we will have a traditional lead back for those inside and off tackle runs.

I'd like to know the number of plays a fullback was used the last couple of years and how effective they were from that set. It seems like a wasted roster spot to me and I feel a backup from another position should be able to be coached up to perform there. Especially, in what seems like limited plays.

JMO but there is a 0 % chance of that happening but I sure wish it would.

Agreed.

Who the hell expects a 3rd round DT and 4th round DE to combine for 10+ sacks as rookies?

That would be asking for too much even with a 1st and 2nd combination of players.

Maybe a rookie surprises, we'd all love to see it, but I doubt we're expecting or depending on that kind of immediate production from any newb.

I'm hoping DeMarcus Lawrence continues where he left off last season.

The jump needs to come from Randy Gregory playing the all important RDE position and Tyrone Crawford playing UT with both arms working.

Those are the money spots in this defensive scheme.

FWIW, Charles Haley was a 4th round pick in 1986 and had 12 sacks his rookie season. How he made it to the 4th round is still beyond me, but just sayin'...

Small guy at 235 coming out of a small school in James Madison. 4th round was pretty high under the circumstances.

Unfortunately, Haley was the exception rather than the rule.

I thought it was reported he had the very same injury as Dez, whom had the very same injury as Julio Jones, which kept both guys from playing anything close to their ability post-surgery the first year.

I'm a bit pessimistic a 300+ lbs dancing around is going to be good to go.

You need a lead back at times but it is a small number of snaps. We've tried F Backs and FBs with limited success. I've called for a big back to get dirty yards and lead block for several years.

It's true we need around 40+ sacks, since all of last years playoff teams had a min of 42. I wish we had 2 10+ sack DEs and 1 10-15 sack DT.

Actually, there have been tons of good pass rushers drafted in the late rounds in NFL history.

Are you trying to say that there are better pass rushers in history of NFL after the first 3 rounds than before? If not then those successful pass rushers taken late aRe still the exception and not the rule.

There is a reason why teams covet their early round picks, the talent is better and the bust rate is lower.

Defensive lineman seem to come from all parts of the draft.

Michael Bennett, Jay Ratliff, Geno Atkins, Greg Hardy, Elvis Dumervil, Robert Mathis, Jared Allen....

They're not uncommon.

Now compare those names to guys like Bruce Smith, Lawrence Taylor, Gino Marchetti, Bob Lilly, Randy White, Derrick Thomas, Warren Sapp, Demarcus Ware, Von Miller, JJ Watt, etc.

HUGE difference between these guys.

The best players are found in the high rounds for a reason. There will always be exceptions because no system is infallible, but great players/pass rushers in the lower rounds is not the rule and hardly "common".

Last years Supperbowl opponents:
Carolina had ONE player with 10+ sacks (Kawaan Short 11) and no other player had more than 6
Denver had ONE player with 10+ sacks (Von Miller 11) no one other player had more than 7.5 (which was our beloved Demarcus Ware).

We don't have to have 3-4 players with 10+ sacks to be legitimate. To hit the 40+ threshold that is spoke ab, all we need is a collection of talented guys. And that's exactly the way Marinelli prefers and has assembled. There is a ton of talent on this team just waiting to make a name for themselves. I predict by seasons end we WILL have 40+ sacks and have 2-3 break out DL. Yeah, I get, there's a lot of "what If's".. But folks need to concede that we have a lot of unproven talent that will get a ton of pressures, which will ultimately lead to more sacks. I.e- Lawrence, TCrawford, Thornton, Gregory, Mayowa, McClain, Collins, Irving, Russell, JCrawford, Tapper, and this McAdoo kid.. I'm actually excited to see it unfold. Enjoy.
