This was a huge risk of a pick considering we had so many needs at other positions.

I didn't like the pick at the time and Clay had to be holding his breath when the selection was done.

Considering they had failed at trading for Lynch and desparately needed DL help and still did this..

it has failure written all over it.

Very strange move by a FO that had drafted so well in the last 4 drafts.

If anything happens to Elliott..this draft could be a huge setback for yeats to come.

We'll see.

Didn't like the pick at all.. Like you said to many needs to justify a gamble.. It's like you have enough to money to pay the mortgage but not enough for the car payment . You play
The lottery with all your mortgage money. You hit for 10,000 dollars. Just because the gamble worked don't mean that long term it was the right move..

And if Collins recovers and plays well from his ankle injury, Tapper is a steal, Dak proves out to be the next QB, Elliot stays healthy, and Jaylon Smith recovers...this draft can set up the team for years to come.
It can go both ways. But I bet there are more saying it won't happen, than people saying it will happen. And I can't blame them either.

They wanted one of the 2 DE's. but both were selected before them, so they took Smith. Now I do agree, they should have went a different direction, as I am not into drafting injured players at all, not even in the 6th or 7th round. Which they like to do way too often. They waste too many picks by trying to out smart everyone, when all they do is outsmart themselves...or out dumb more likely. LOL.

However it has happened, and I am pulling for his recovery and will be a fan. But at this point it is more hoping he recovers than knowing he will recover.

Good overview.

Its just weird.

We pay the guy as a starter for the next 2 years while he recovers and then if he can play..

we probably get average performance while he gets back to being able to play at speed.

Then he is gone after a year or 2 more when his rookie deal ends.

At the best..we get maybe 2 years on his 4 year deal, pay him as a near #1 pick and assuming he has no setbacks..

he leaves for more money or we have to double his deal to keep him.

Not very smart if you ask me.

It generally takes a month for the damaged portion of the peroneal nerve to begin to regrow – and ideally, this regrowth should continue at a rate of one inch per month. Each day, Smith reports feeling “new sensations through his leg and foot,” which happily indicates his nerve axons are regrowing. “I don’t have time to doubt myself,” he told reporters, while icing his knees between workouts. “For me, a positive attitude and constantly putting work in to get better – that’s where I’m at, controlling what I can control,” he added.
In April, Dr. Cooper reported that Smith’s nerve had regrown two inches but still had another six inches to go before it reached leg muscle. “I wouldn’t really expect him to get much innervation back into that muscle for two or three more months,” he said. “Then once it does – I’ve seen kids who are completely paralyzed like him on the lateral side and not able to pick their foot up at all [who] wind up being totally normal.”
Three months after surgery, Smith has gotten past deficit work and progressed to functional compensation drills and weight training exercises. He squats and tackles dummies while testing out a new ankle foot orthosis device that helps him lift his left foot.
As Smith continues through his recovery, it helps that he is already a “creature of habit,” as his chef, Jim Huffman, put it. Smith does his rehabilitation exercises faithfully from 9 to 11 a.m. and returns to a full afternoon of strength training from 1 to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Some past high school and college football players have also played following a foot drop injury, so Smith’s prognosis seems hopeful. In the worst case scenario, Dr. Cooper says a tendon transfer could be done to hold Smith’s foot in place. In the best case scenario, Smith regains all his strength. The Cowboys say they won’t put Smith on Injured Reserve at the start of the season, taking a chance he’ll be ready for the playoffs.

I think Cowboys got the best information possible from Dr Cooper and while there is a risk there are also indication that he is healing as expected. If Smith recovers as expected many feel the Cowboys got a great player in Jaylon

Can't wait to see him play but I'd be extremely suprised if he played this season.

Love the story, like everything you hear about the player. But this was a stupid risk at that point in the draft. He may come all the way back by next season and make the move look genius in retrospect, but it was still an unnecessary risk.

How do you know he will leave and not be resigned. He may be a Jason Witten who retires from this franchise. Or could be someone who seem a team take a chance on him high in the draft and want to be a cowboy for life.

The safe move at LB was Ragland. The iffy moves were Jack and Smith.

I don't see this as big of a risk as people think. He's a second round pick.

Frankly, I think taking Elliott at 4 was a bigger, more unnecessary risk. Not that I don't think Elliott can play. He can. But I think with this OL you could have gotten production from the running back without having to invest in a top flight TB prospect and used that pick to address a real need (or try to secure your future with Romo's replacement).

From a health perspective, sure. But for what a team may want out of their LB, maybe not. Ragland is strictly an inside guy. You can't play him at Will or on the edge like you could with Smith and Jack. So if a team wanted a LB who provided flexibility, Ragland isn't your guy. If you are just looking for the healthiest LB and plan on playing him strictly at Mike, then maybe Ragland was the wiser pick.

I don't like the Elliot pick, either.

But it was the #34 pick in the whole draft we're talking about here. That's a starter on a defense in desperate need of starters. That's Xavien Howard to replace Carr or Mo next season, and we take a WIL/MIKE with a career in question and a medical redshirt year in front of him. He might well end up a fantastic player, but it's still an unnecessary risk.

I don't know.

What I do know is its all a repetition of what we did with Sean Lee.

We drafted him with a cronic history of injuries and look what we got..

Half seasons for about 5 years and last year his first real season of productipn and he still suffered 2 concussions.

I know he went to the Pro Bowl becuz another guy passed the opportunity..

but still..that is not enough considering his contract IMO.

So I look at Smith the same way.

Thats what bothers me.

This team invests in projects too much with our high pics.

I think most of us shake our heads just about every year.

We seem to get our first pick correct but just struggle with hitting on 2nd and 3rd picks.

If we could ever draft 3 starter guys with our top 3 picks we could change the team.

But we never can manage it.We always get an Escobar or a Bennett or a Claiborne or Gregory along with the haul.

Just frustrating.

Outside of this injury Jaylon Smith has no history of injury at ND.
