News: DMN: Is Mo Claiborne's resurgence real or just a product of not facing elite WRs?

For all the criticism, deserved and unwarranted, we give the Cowboys' front office, I think we have to give them credit for not giving up on Claiborne. They were able to re-sign him on a relatively cheap deal this year in the belief that, somehow, all that talent and athletic ability that made him the consensus #1 corner in the 2012 draft was still there, somewhere.

Now I wonder what the cost will be to re-sign him if Mo really does become a shutdown corner this year.

I have been one of his harshest critics. Give me 3 more Sundays to think about it and I'll get back to you. It will be a bucket of crow or "I told you so". Hopefully the crow.

If he keeps Green out of pay dirt, I'll call it a win.

Uhhhhhhhgggg. Typical contract year player. Don't get me wrong, I'll take it. But haven't we seen this 500 times?

He's going to be pricier than people want him to be, that's for sure. But don't listen to Brian Broadus on Mo. He wants to stay here and he wants redemption in Dallas. His whole family are Cowboys fans. If we want to pay market-rate, we'll keep him. I'm not sure we do, or we should, though. My preference would be to structure a good paying deal (he's going to get first or second FA CB money if he stays healthy and plays well all 16 game here) that's somehow tiered for the team if he gets significantly injured or regresses. Let him get the big dollars his position deserves if he plays well, but don't saddle Dallas with another tough contract on Mo like we did the first time around. It's going to be a tough call.

Looking back in hindsight, you could argue with limited resources that the Cowboys had one of the best offseasons of anyone.

Dak, Zeke, Thorton, re-signing Claiborne and Carr's pay cut, Anthony Brown, Maliek Collins....mostly of rookies but it was solid moves and acquisitions.

The Mo deal was a no brainer to me. It made no sense to give up on him for that salary. This guy didn't just luck into being the 6th overall pick. He wasn't like some guy who was a workout warrior. There was a skill there and the one trend that you could see from him was his lack of training camps and his injury. The one year deal was worth seeing if he could get healthy and if he couldn't move on and it was low risk.

I wish i remembered which threads it was where i broke down Claiborne's play last year against some of the better WRs in the league. Is it real what Mo is doing? Yes. This isn't the first time he's shut down quality WRs. He's actually done really well against OBJ, did fantastically against Julio Jones, and pretty much eliminated Brandin Cooks last year and had some good pass breakups.

I hate to keep repeating it, but like he struggled slightly with some jump balls in week 3, he isn't great against lengthy WRs. So, expect Green to give him some trouble.

Mo will most likely be back next year at a price here people will hate. I expect us to go after a CB in FA, right now, I have my eye on Trumaine Johnson unless Rams resign him.

People forget those games where he had against Julio last year.

I don't think we go CB. If we do possibly a lower tier guy but I think you will see most of our resources going to receiver and that front 7.

I don't think they will ever spend high resources on that secondary again. Or not for awhile.

The big thing is that he's tackling well and making some tackles with authority. I just don't think you can be an effective corner in today's game with the short/quick passes if you can't tackle. And he's actually looking like a good tackling corner. I still have some issues with him fighting off blocks, but the tackling is quite respectable. And with that, teams can't throw short/quick passes against you anymore and they have to throw it deep and it gives you a chance to intercept some passes. I think there was some separation on the interception, but you tend to see that in the NFL when it comes to INT's. You just can't allow the QB to make an easy throw. If they make a mistake...the CB has to take advantage of it.

Good post.

But I hope we go after DL help if we're going to make a big FA signing.

I really think Anthony Brown could be good next year.

I don't know, after the hoopla over Patmon a year ago, I'm just down on these late CB picks. He may turn out to be something, but if a clear #1 CB hits the market I'd like to sign them. It would go a long way to improving the pass rush as well. I haven't looked into DE's hitting the market.
