Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist E-mail News tips

The players have spoken this week. Loud and clear. Oh, how they love Wade Phillips.

They're upset because his leadership and approach to handling the Cowboys has been questioned for the 10 millionth time since Jerry Jones hired him instead of Norv Turner three seasons ago.

The players love Phillips' demeanor. And his schemes. And the way he accepts responsibility for their mistakes.

Who wouldn't love a guy like that?

It's time for the players to prove their love. After all, words without actions are worthless.

This week, the players should win one for Wade. It has a nice ring to it.

If the players are sincere about their affection for Phillips, then they need to beat San Diego, ending the Chargers' seven-game winning streak. That'll get Phillips off the hot seat, stop the chatter about his eventual replacement and temporarily silence the critics - count me as one - who question his leadership.

It'll even stop us from talking about the Cowboys 3-6 record in December and their inability to play their best football in the season's most important month.

Afterward, don't give us any excuses. No mea culpas. No coulda, woulda, shoulda.
This is not the week for Terence Newman to let an interception slip through his hands or for Flozell Adams to succumb to his own agenda and start a brawl. This is not the week for Nick Folk to miss a field goal because the hold isn't perfect.

Just win the game. Plain and simple.

This is as close to a must-win as the Cowboys can get without being mathematically eliminated with a loss.

Any player or coach who doesn't realize that needs a brain transplant. If it takes that approach, Dallas will win.

It's hard to beat a desperate NFL team at home. Look at how Green Bay drilled Dallas 17-7 a few weeks ago. Or how the Giants beat Dallas 31-24 last week.

Each was essentially on the verge of being eliminated from the playoffs.

Now, it's the Cowboys who must play as though their season is on the line.

It is.

Beat San Diego and everything Phillips needs to happen to ensure Jerry Jones picks up the team option on his contract remains in play. The Cowboys will still be positioned to win the NFC East, host a playoff game and end their streak of 12 seasons without a playoff win.

Lose, though, and this season is a wrap.

Guarantee it.

Lose and you can make easily make the case the Cowboys won't win another game this season.

That's not hyperbole. It's reality. Whether the players and coaches choose to accept
that is irrelevant.

Logic says the Cowboys could play well and lose in New Orleans, which would give them a three-game losing streak heading into a road game against Washington.

Don't act like you can't see how the Cowboys could lose at Washington, since the Commanders are playing good football and only lost by one point in Cowboys' Stadium a few weeks ago.

Add a four-game losing streak to 24-hour sports talk chatter about Wade's status, Jerry's inevitable vote of confidence and it's a recipe for yet another opportunity for Philadelphia to put Dallas out of its misery.

That's why it's imperative the Cowboys beat San Diego this afternoon.
To do so, their best players must perform at a high level because the Chargers are so good Dallas could play well and lose.

This week it's about Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff. It's about Jason Witten and Andre Gurode and Keith Brooking. It's about Nick Folk and Bradie James and Miles Austin.

The season is on the line.

It's time for the players to make it happen or the kinds words for Phillips will ring hollow.

They control his future.

this from the guy who cherry picks are wins and basically writes stories the next day after a win that would make you think we lost.

So yea, just win coming from him is really a wonderful message.

We should get favorable calls as well since we must win and having us in playoffs is good for business in the NFL.San Diego can afford a loss.

It would have been good for business last year as well but it does not work that way. The league does not care if the Cowboys make the playoffs or not same with any other team out there it is up to the teams to go out and win games. Do you really think the NFL said hey let put Pitt and Arz in the SB, that would be a big draw? :lmao2:

"Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Wader."

Pittsburgh was just too good to let refs beat them and they are an extremely profitable team for the NFL.AZ never been there.Like this year it will be NO and another team that hasnt been there.Probably San Diego or Cincy.NO will win. That city needs the money so bad its not funny and NO is very good anyways. The league makes loads more money if we are in there.Dude wake up professional sports may not be completely fixed but its" handled" to a degree.NBA has been exposed NFL next.Vegas runs the NFL.

So if we lose to San Diego then the players affection for Wade is insincere?

Why, would we throw the game?

people will watch the NFL postseason regardless of who's in it. Basketball and Baseball need certain teams in the post season the NFL doesn't. we haven't accomplisged anything in 12 years soon to be 13 years and the NFL is doing just fine.

I don't about any of you folks. But, good god am I sick and tired of the media, and them thinking that December's the "most" important month for football. ALL OF THEM ARE.. September, October, November December, January. EVERY GAME is important.

Hey JJT, go talk to the Rams and The Lions, let me know how "important" only December is the only football month important to them you tool.

If you ain't winnin in the other 3 months, December ain't gonna mean ****.

I'm wide awake and no the league is not fixed they do not determine who goes to the SB, teams do. NFL has more to lose than to gain should it ever be known that the NFL is nothing but a version of the WWF. It is why the league takes a very tough stance on gambling by it's members much like Baseball and how they handled Pete Rose these pro sports have everything to lose should the games not be on the up and up.

NBA exposed a crooked ref and he was fired, he did it for himself no one else.

just don't understand how ANYONE can CONCLUDE that if we lose to San Diego we will NOT win another game. Who else in the NFL is viewed this way as much as Dallas. Had we BEAT the Giants, that does not mean we are WINNERS in December. It means we were 1-0 with 3 to go. If we BEAT the Chargers, it STILL does not make us winners in December, it means we are 1-1 with 2 to go. The media is always talking about this team wanting to speed past the regular season to get to the playoffs. When in FACT it is the MEDIA who want and answer NOW about how Dallas will fare in December. At the END of December, we can add all 4 games up and we will ALL know if this team can or cannot win in December.

Sounds like you are definitely onto something. Should make these games pretty easy to predict. Have you quit your day job yet?

Good piece by JJT. He is absolutely right too. The only way to silence the critics is to prove them wrong by winning in Dec/Jan. Wade's job depends on it and these players need to stand up for him on the field the way he does for them with the press.
