Machota: How a perfect Cowboys draft would unfold ... and what I think will happen

SportsDay's Jon Machota answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Do you think Dez will show up for OTAs?

Jon Machota: I don't think Dez will be at OTAs. Until he gets a long term deal, I expect Dez to only be at the mandatory off-season activities. Denver WR Demaryius Thomas is in the same situation as Bryant. He was also given the franchise tag. Neither player has signed their one-year tender, so I expect both to work out on their own until they are required to be at the facility.

Question: Who would you take at 27 if Gurley has already been taken, specifically if we were leaning towards corners?

Jon Machota: They should have a decent group to pick from at CB. And that's probably the direction I'd go if the right defensive lineman isn't available. Trae Waynes, Kevin Johnson, Byron Jones, Marcus Peters, Jalen Collins and Ronald Darby are some of the top corners in this class. I expect at least three of them to still be there at 27. If the Cowboys aren't comfortable with any of them, they could go after the best DL, LB, OL or RB. It all depends on how they have the players ranked on their board. Florida State CB P.J. Williams recently was arrested for DUI and that will likely cause his stock to fall. If the Cowboys aren't concerned about his off the field behavior, Williams could be an option late in Round 2.

Question: Jon- Where are you physically located for the draft? DFW? Chicago? Do you watch it with others, or fly solo? Just curious.

Jon Machota: I watch it from Valley Ranch. It really is the best place to be for anyone covering the team. After each of the Cowboys' picks, they get the player on a conference call with all of the reporters at the practice facility. That's also where Jerry, Stephen and Will McClay are and they're usually available to comment on the picks. The only reporters in Chicago will be the ones who cover the entire league. If you cover a specific team, you're most likely at their practice facility.

Question: K Johnson, B Jones, or M Peters? If they were all available, who would you pick?

Jon Machota: Johnson. He seems to be the safest bet of the bunch. He has the ideal height, plenty of experience playing man coverage, he doesn't have the off the field concerns and he can help immediately on special teams.

Question: I don't want to trade up or trade for AD...I want to add three good, young players where I sit in the first three rounds. If I"m locked at the RB position at #60, do you like #27 CB and #91 DL, or the other way around? Where is there greater depth this year?

Jon Machota: It really is all about drafting the best player available. That's what the best teams in the league do. So I would say, in a perfect world, this is how the Cowboys' draft would go: Todd Gurley or Bud Dupree would fall to them at 27, they'd find a CB or DL in Round 2 and a CB or DL in round 3. How I think it will go: The best player at 27 will be a CB and that's what they'll take. The second round could be the spot for their next RB and the third round would then be to find an underrated defensive lineman that Rod Marinelli can eventually turn into a starter.

Sounds good to me. If we get a good CB, RB and DT/DE in this draft who can contribute this year, I'll be doing back flips (figuratively, since I can't do back flips except off a diving board).
