In the 2015 NFL draft, the Cowboys selected UConn defensive back Byron Jones with the 27th pick. Here are 10 things you may not know about Jones including his family's ties to the military, his time spent in government and a world record he broke.

La’el Collins and Randy Gregory have received the majority of attention when it comes to this year’s Cowboys rookie class. First-round pick Byron Jones has quietly taken a back seat.

While some might feel slighted in a similar situation, Jones is just fine outside of the spotlight.

“I’m going to perform my best regardless if I’m the last guy picked, the first guy picked, free agent or tryout guy,” Jones said. “I’m going to give it all I got; that’s all I know how to do.”

Reading a politically correct response like that from Jones wouldn’t surprise his college teammates. At the University of Connecticut, he earned the nickname Senator Jones.

“If football doesn’t work out for Byron, which that doesn’t look like it’s going to be a problem, Byron will be the president of the United States, one day,” former UConn teammate Max DeLorenzo said.

A bold statement, but one that makes some sense when you research Jones’ background. During the summer of 2013, the cornerback’s time away from football was spent on a pair of internships.

Is it possible Byron Jones just found out about 'Deflategate'?
  • Stephen Jones: Top pick gives Cowboys a Seahawks look
  • Barry Church: Byron Jones is a 'freak athlete'
  • Machota: Cowboys should be solid at cornerback as long as this happens ...

It's a bit annoying when articles say that he jumped to the 1st round after the combine. It is highly likely that he was a top 20 player on the Cowboys board before the combine.

The big "jumps" that players make on draft boards are the media draft boards, not NFL team draft boards. Obviously, saying the player made jump up draft boards is easier for the draft media to say than "we overlooked this guy and are now correcting our mistake".

I agree, Jones was in the 1st round before the combine on the Cowboys board. Great pick and think he will be able to defend the big WR's.

Exactly right, anyone who thinks a guy skyrockets up team boards because he can jump far is out to lunch. A player in the top 300-400 is going to get plenty of attention, NFL teams have done there homework on each of them and know what they can and can't do for the most part. Most times a team misses on a guy is because they can't get the mental part down, scheme fit issues or the player is a head case and uncoachable. When they underestimate it's usually because they come from a small school and it's tough to judge against lesser competition, a player had injury issues or a lack of playing time because there respective college team had great depth.

I really hope this kid makes up for the Mo pick and the bad memories that came along with that dark day in team history,

Only saw the guy play twice, haven't seen him enough to have a real opinion about him.

What happens is some GM will fall in love with a guy at the combine and that is how such mistakes are made. Has nothing to do with moving up drastically on the draft board.
