Message to Marcus Spears?
Two defensive starters are still on the field: OLB Anthony Spencer and DE Marcus Spears.

Spencer is a rookie learning a new position. He needs all the work he can get.

Spears is a third-year veteran who has been a first-round bust so far. He played well in the second preseason game against the Broncos, but it sure seems like Wade Phillips is trying to tell him something while the rest of the starters sit.

Let's see the Spears' apologists spin this one.

I admit to thinking the same thing when I saw him out there.

He's barely made a play against backups, either.

And one more thing, Hatcher looked great rushing the passer.

Two theories:

1) We are trying (and failing) to showcase Spears for a possible trade.

2) Spears may have asked to play longer in this game so he can work on his game.

Personally, I think he's been a wasted draft pick thus far. But I'm pulling for him to prove me (and everyone else) wrong.

It will be a real shame if Carp and Spears dont turn out to be players that Big Bill thought they would be when he drafted them.

Would put a big question mark on Parcells drafting skills here in Dallas....

I'm afraid they might be. Carpenter has looked abysmal tonight, IMO. I hope he's just going through the motions trying to avoid injury.

I can't see the game - only hear it. But from what I can tell, Spears has been in all night (early 4th quarter as I type) and only has one tackle. For those who can see the game, how does he look?

Maybe the message being sent is "we only have a couple of D-linemen so at least one starter has to see time".

The announcers reported that the coaching staff went to Spears before the game and told him that since they were thin at DL he might play the whole game.
