Michael Irvin says Chan Gailey didn't 'manage people' well during his time as Cowboys head coach

http://www.***BANNED-URL***/incoming/20111112-111111cgailey_dal2.jpg.ece/BINARY/w620x413/111111cgailey_dal2.jpg

story in the New York Daily News on Wednesday reported that Irvin told a local NY radio station that Gailey was not the motivator that a head coach needs to be.

“It’s more than just Xs and Os, it’s about managing people,” Irvin said on WFAN. “If you don’t know how to do that you’re not going to survive, bottom line.”

Irvin recalled a situation when Gailey supposedly told linebacker Darren Hambrick that he would be playing, despite the fact that the coach didn’t really want him out there.

When Hambrick told Irvin about the conversation, Irvin said he told Gailey that Jimmy Johnson would have handled the matter differently.

“You’re going to have to motivate people and you’re going to have to approach people,” Irvin said.

That is true of any management position. Managers really underestimate the value if a motivated group of people with a common agenda. Jason Garrett does get it.

And one reason I posted this. It is a TEAM. Best get everyone on the same page properly motivated, agitated, hostile and agile, and ready for war.

That's why I always preferred the title 'manager' over 'coach'. The NFL position is much more about management than say a high school coach.

I remember a few years back I was listening to Irving on his radio show and he referred to the "chump" that came after Jimmy left. His co-host's asked if he meant Switzer, and he says "nah, Switzer was a good man, the chump was the guy after Switzer".

Yes, it's well known that Aikman/Irvin didn't like Gailey. I've heard Aikman make a derogatory reference to Gailey's offensive scheme.

It's more about the We, than the Me, and the best managers understand and maximize this.

I liked Gailey but he had the goofy idea of making Michael Irvin less involved in the offense at the expense of Ernie Mills. That pretty much eliminated any honeymoon period for him.

It was Jeff Ogden wasn't it?

But how would have Switzer handled it?

Getting players to "buy into" their head coach's methods, his ways of communicating and his program is one of the primary necessities of every head coach. If a HC fails in any one of those things, he isn't likely to last. Chan evidently wasn't much of a communicator. Some guy have that ability and some don't. I'm just glad JG does.

And sometimes you don't have to approach them. :)

I didn't like his Xs and Os, either.

Or his use as personnel. Using Mills over Irvin was a huge mistake. Also, there were times I would see Mills used in blitz protection against LBs. It was a mess.

Never been a fan of Chan Gailey...it's not like he's been great at any of his coaching stops since the 90s. Yet somehow he keeps getting coordinator jobs

I think he should have stayed in the college ranks all along. He's a very good guy although I don't know his people skills.
